A Great Read for Martial Artist and Lay person alike
By Scott Masterton
Chojun is the third Powell book that I've read. Waking Dragons was the first, an autobiographical story of Powells early journey in the martial arts; Sudden Dawn, the story of a young Da mo (Buddha) and finally Chojun, the story of Chojun Miyagi, the father of Goju Ryu. It does not dissappoint. Sudden Dawn did a wonderful job of describing the essence of the Buddha, so too does Chojun describe the essence of Miyagi.

The story is told through the eyes of a fictional young man and student of Chojun Miyagi's; Powell does a wonderful job of working the facts of Miyagi's life into a great story but more important than the fact is the time period that shaped the Karate master. As an American I've never experienced the reality of an invading force coming into my land and the fight to drive them out. Powell does an admirable job of making the reader feel what it would be like to not only be invaded by a foreign country, but to also be used as vassals of Japan to fight a war that they did not start.

As a martial artist I enjoyed this very much, but as someone fascinated by history I enjoyed it even more. I highly recommend Chojun to those interested in the history of Goju Ryu or to anyone looking to experience a taste of what it might have been like being on the "other side".

A great book. I'm looking forward to more from Mr. Powell.

A nove, about Chojun Miyagi
By Carlos A. Simmons
The book was a really good read. It reads like someone writing from memory even though it is part fiction and part researched reality. I expected to get more martial arts insight but I got more life insights from my own memories. I even felt a lot of emotion on certify time in Okinawa, my martial art training and my relationship with the master and everyone else in training just as the main character in the novel. It also made me know how fortunate I was to have my instructor around for a great deal longer than 20 years.

Good historical FICTION
By Konstantin Ozerinsky
This is a good read for someone who is interested in the subject matter and enjoys a good novel. Its very well written, good plot, good characters, but in the end it really walks a line between really getting into the characters, and really getting into the history. In the end, it does neither. We learn very little about the life of Chojun Miyagi that we didn't know before, and we gain little insight into Karate from his fictional representation.

But, I still liked it.
