Baseball's Last Great Scout: The Life of Hugh Alexander, by Daniel L. Austin PhD

Late in 1937 Hugh Alexander, a kid fresh out of small-town Oklahoma, had just finished his second year playing outfield for the Cleveland Indians when an oil rig accident ripped off his left hand. Within three months he was back with the Indians, but this time as a scout—the youngest ever in Major League history. In the next six decades he signed more players who made it to the Majors than any other scout.

His story, Baseball’s Last Great Scout, reads like a backroom, bleacher-seat history of twentieth-century baseball—and a primer on what it takes to find a winner. It gives a gritty picture of learning the business on the road, from American Legion field to try-out camp to beer joint, and making the fine distinctions between “performance” and “tools of the trade” when checking out prospects. Over the years Alexander worked for the Indians, the White Sox, the LA Dodgers, the Phillies, and the Cubs—and signed the likes of Allie Reynolds, Don Sutton, and Marty Bystrom. This book, based on extensive interviews and Alexander’s journals, is filled with memorable characters, pithy lessons, snapshots of American life, and a big picture of America’s pastime from one of its great off-the-field players.

Review
“Baseball’s Last Great Scout was a great pleasure for me to read. Hugh Alexander was one of the most interesting and unique men I ever met. As far as baseball: his best quality was enthusiasm for the game along with confidence and desire to make his teams better. He was a great help to me and everyone else he worked with over the years.”—Jim Frey, former Major League Baseball coach and manager (Jim Frey 2012-09-20)

“‘Uncle Hughie’ was truly an icon, a legend, and, as the book shows, a super scout. I’ve always felt the scouting profession in baseball has been underappreciated because so few fans really understand the trials and tribulations of the people who are the lifeblood of any organization. Dan’s book delves into one of the real old-time scout’s daily efforts to find the next Major League Baseball player. Hughie’s efforts played out in every change in scouting from true free agency to several changes in the draft rules. And because of his efforts and shrewdness in adapting to these changes, he helped all his teams get better. A fun read about a true character that I know you’ll enjoy.”—Dallas Green, senior advisor to the general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies (Dallas Green 2012-09-20)

"Dan Austin's appreciation of Alexander provides baseball fans with a sense of how scouts discovered and cultivated players before the advent of the Major League Scouting Bureau."—Bill Littlefield, Only a Game (Bill Littlefield Only a Game 2013-04-20)

Great baseball story
By Norman
Baseball's Last Great Scout, is an inspirational story about Hugh Alexander, a young ball player, who made the best of his life, after a heart-breaking tragedy. The book is filled with baseball nostalgia.

Dan Austin really knows his stuff. He brings many lesser known aspects of the game to the reader: the minor leagues, scouting, small-town farm clubs, managing, all entwined in Alexander's story, which will keep you interested throughout the book. If you're a sports aficionado, this is one you'll enjoy.

Dan Austin hits a home run with "The Last Great Scout"
By Jeffrey S. Schrier
Danny Austin smacks one out of the park with his comprehensive yet folksy story about Hugh Alexander. Alexander, an aspiring baseball phenom had his career cut short when he lost his left hand in a farming accident during the off-season. This occurred shortly after he was brought up to play in Cleveland with the Indians. The story of how this remarkable man persevered should be a lesson to all people who have experienced hardship in their own lives.

The fact that Alexander lost his chance to play in the big leagues did not deter him from a career in baseball. Mr. Austin chronicles Hugh Alexander's contributions to the game during six decades of scouting in the south and midwest for potential raw talent and later on scouting talent on the major league level. A contributor to several pennant and world series winners, "Uncle Hughie" not only signed future major leaguers but was the architect of putting together trades on the major league level that provided teams with a core of players that inevitably boosted the talent level of teams that once downtrodden, were now contenders.

The anecdotes provided only demonstrate the core beliefs of this baseball veteran. True to his Oklahoma beliefs, Alexander looked for certain traits in ball players, none of which revolves around the present day myriad of statistics used by many of today's front offices. Alexander would rate a player not only on his ability but what made him tick. Reading about how this was done by him is not only fascinating but heartwarming. It should be read by every front office executive in the game today. Sabermetrics can only go so far in predicting the success of a player. Alexander, while a product of another generation goes the extra yard and discusses the core values that really make the difference in upping the odds of a player actually making it to the majora and once there, achieving success.

This book is a must read for coaches of all sports on any level because the lessons contained within can definitely improve any program greatly. Aspiring athletes can also prosper from reading this book as they'll learn what scouts look for that will not be contained on the stat sheets. While there are some errata in the printing, Mr. Austin is to be commended for putting out a product that does more than provide an interesting read.

More Stories Than Historical
By John Gilmore
I was hoping for a more detailed historical book along the lines of the McFarland titles, but this book is essentially more of a collection of stories and memories collected by tape and nine years later edited into a book. It was still a good read, but didn't really put things in the content of the game at the time or give any great insights on scouting.

Reading the book, you'd think everyone Hugh signed played MLB. How about some insights into how many he signed that didn't make it? There's a paragraph where he gets married and later just a sentence that he divorced. There are claims that Hugh made all the trades and Dallas Green was essentially just there. I doubt Dallas sees it this way. Hugh seemingly gets credit for the Cubs signing Andre Dawson, but this had more to do with collusion and that's never addressed. Overall, it just felt like the writer didn't have the baseball background to put things in context.
