A series of lapidary short stories by the winner of the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction. The first and last are about a girl in the suburbs of L.A. named Avery; in the opening story, she is the first black girl in her class and in love with an Okie named Melvin; in the last, Avery is grown up, about to break up with her Italian lover over food and her mother. In between are a lovely evocation of friendship between two Persian sisters and the narrator; a vividly offensive tale about a porn star and his buddy who use his girlfriend in a spectacularly offensive example of verbal abuse (the title story); an older woman's monologue, remembering the friend of her youth in a Frankie and Johnny tale. The narrators in these stories are old and young (mostly young), male and female (mostly female), and the language is sharp edged and contemporary. GraceAnne DeCandido

Good, solid short fiction

Dana Johnson has great characterization and style. The work is entertaining (surprisingly erotic at times) and a good way to kill an hour or two. Throughly enjoyable stuff.

Honest, Sensual, and Brave Writing

I appreciate the honesty and bravery of these stories. Dana Johnson's writing is sensual and realistic. She approaches issues and topics that are difficult: namely race, class and sex. She writes about straddling cultures in a poignant, nuanced manner. She does not stray from writing about sex.

Her range of characters is impressive. She gives voice to characters that we don't usually get to hear from, and her characters have dignity. The characters seemed real and I cared about what happened to them. I love that. "Melvin in the Sixth Grade", "Three Ladies Sipping Tea in a Persian Garden", and "Markers" are my favorite stories in this collection.

Dana Johnson is a brave, adept writer. I look forward to reading more from her.

Imperfect, But Groundbreaking Short Stories

Dana Johnson's characters embody the cultural touchstones of many of us in our thirties and forties -- school integration, young women who must decide whether to be supported by and supportive of a man or strike out on their own, and, a society in which sex is easy to find and love elusive.
The stories in "Break Any Woman Down" occur in the new, multicultural America. A friend or lover might be from any ethnic background. Immigrant associates from Iran or Italy are as common as parents from down South. Some of the stories turn on the tensions inherent in straddling cultural lines. However, the commonalities that bind people are not overlooked. Friendship is a recurring theme, whether overtly or subtlely. For example, in "Melvin in the Sixth Grade," the schoolgirl protagonist must choose between her dream of acceptance by most of her new white classmates and loyalty to the one friend she actually has. In "Break Any Woman Down," an older, but not necessarily wiser, protagonist becomes the odd woman out in a threesome of friends bound by love -- and jealousy.
Another hallmark of Johnson's writing is an explicit approach to sexuality. I have rarely seen the topic written about with such unabashed directness in domestic realism.
This is not a perfect book. My major criticism is the characters often seem to lack substance. Their conversations tend to be too vacuous. One gets the feeling that much of what really matters to the characters is remaining unsaid, probably because the writer does not know how to express it in dialogue.
Still, Johnson has my interest and empathy. As someone from the same multicultural milieu she hails from, I can vouch for the authenticity of how she depicts our lives. I look forward to new and better works from this writer.

In the end I am telling about the death of Joan and the rehabilitation proceeding 20 years after to underline the connection with political and religious motifs.

Not Quite What I Expected

The book is a collection of essays, each covering a different topic or aspect of Charlotte. On the positive side, if you need or want information about this city, there is a lot in here. On the negative side, the book is, well, rather dry. More of an academic slant than I was looking for. Nothing wrong with that, I suppose, but after a few chapters, I stated to skim, and even skipped a couple of chapters altogether. I kind of feel bad about not being more positive about the book, but it just wasn't what I was expecting, which is not the fault of the authors. I was simply looking for a different type of book than what this proved to be.

South Florida sleuth looks for catnapppers and murderers

Archy McNally is a charming rogue. He's the son of a wealthy attorney, but is self-deprecating and doesn't take himself too seriously. He is asked to find a cat who belongs to one of Archy's father's wealthy clients and who has been catnapped, complete with ransom note and a demand for money. Later, another client is murdered and Archy suspects that the two cases are connected. He does some discreet inquiry and becomes entangled with a friendly female and an eccentric psychic. These elements cause no end of complications to Archy, both personally and professionally, and he finds himself in big trouble before the case is solved. This is a light and enjoyable read and will provide the reader with a lot of chuckles.

Living in South Florida makes the books of this series even more interesting. Archy McNally's first book not only introduces us to investigator Archy McNally, investigator and man about town, but to the author's view of life in the city of Palm Beach. I have told friends you need to look at Archy a little on the light side...lots of humor here with the story line. RECOMMENDED

I hemmed over the purchase of the book. When I started to read it [My first Sanders book] I was delighted by the characters. No one is what they seem. The first impression is stereotypes but I found that everyone had depths that you would never have attributed to them [Peaches too]. Archie who seems as feather headed as they come and is up there with the best.
The plot twists are tied together neatly leaving a satisfied feeling at the end. While looking for other McNally's books I discovered that Lawrence Sanders had died. I felt the disappointment I feel when I find that one of my favorite authors has died. It says a lot on the first book to get that feeling.
I almost turned it down when I read the reviews if you love Block you'll love this. I hate Block. I love Sanders. I plan on reading the rest of Sander's McNally books and plan on the others too. It was a pleasing suprise. Try it you might be also pleased and suprised.

An excellent book for Kids of all ages.

"Your Guinea Pig: A kids Guide to Raising and Showing" is the best available book on the subject that can be found for "kids" of all ages. As a guinea pig breeder for over 10 years, I have finally found the book I have been searching for.

This book covers basic care and handling of the guinea pig as well as showing your guinea pig. Topics such as breeding your guinea pig are handled in such a way as to make one think before proceeding on such a project. Advice on finding a good veterinarian as well as knowing when you need a veterinarian are covered.

This is the book that I recommend to every newcomer to the guinea pig fancy, young or old. It also includes a reference section on where to find other sources of information.

The book is very useful for any guinea pig owners. There is a section on how to groom long-hired species. The most useful part is the section on illnesses and what to do in the event of the illness. Very Helpful!

The drugs belong to arms dealer Viktor Dusic, who intended on using the funds from the drugs to finance a coup. With his core team, he hopes to instigate a terrorist attack that will begin the Bosnian conflict anew. Dusic is a savage who sees himself wronged by the past and happy to use any level of violence to achieve his goals. About the Author
Tom Young has logged more than 4,500 hours as a flight engineer for the Air National Guard in Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia, Kosovo, and elsewhere, including Latin America, the Horn of Africa, and the Far East. His military honors include three Air Medals, three Aerial Achievement Medals, and the Air Force Combat Action Medal. Young served with the Air National Guard for more than twenty years and retired as a Senior Master Sergeant. He is also the author of The Renegades.

Another winner from Tom Young

This is the third book with a lot of the same characters, and all of them have been very well written. Many of us have some familiarity with the military in some form, so we struggle with books that are unrealistic, or show a lack of knowledge, or a lack of diligence by the author. That is not the case with Tom Young. He has great understanding of our armed services, particularly concerning aviation and aviation services, and that knowledge is well reflected in his writing. Additionally, Young's writing is so descriptive you can feel the chill of the wind, taste the dust, and hear the sounds. Also, Young's books are atypical in that endings are often a bit messy, meaning not everything gets resolved to our satisfaction, if at all. Again, that is a more realistic approach, so I'm good with it. So I'm a fan, and like Tom Young a bunch! If you are a fan of Clancy, the late, great Vince Flynn, Ben Coes, and the rest of the great authors in this genre, you will like Tom Young a lot.

ANOTHER WINNER

I keep waiting for Tom Young to write a book that gets just a little bit boring - but, thank God, THE WARRIORS didn't start the trend. Parson and Gold are heroes without a doubt, but they are "everyday" heroes with no special super powers other than guts and brains and heart. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the on-going middle-eastern struggles were high-lighted in this book, but utilized action AND compassion in equal parts. I had no idea some of the warfare technology existed, and the way the history and stories of these lands were described was both technical and poetic. I have just one complaint - I'M READY FOR THE NEXT BOOK.

Plain Vanilla!

The plot of this book is sort of a middle-of-the roader--not too exciting, but not too dull. It lacks the dramatic action scenes that really capture the reader's attention, except at the very end. Yet, the interim sections are not so drab as to lose the reader's interest. I felt there were too many flashbacks by the main characters to events earlier in their lives. Some of these seemed more exciting than the main plot. Another distraction was the heavy dose of the morality of war. The book is an interesting read, but it lacks the punch and intensity to reach off the page and grab the reader by the throat.
