Damals wie heute bildet, wenn auch unter verschiedenen gesellschaftlichen Blickwinkeln, die zeitliche wie räumliche Allgegenwärtigkeit des Todes im Leben der Menschen die Kernaussage der Totentanzvorstellung. Der personifizierte Tod greift handelnd in das Leben der Menschen ein. In ihrer künstlerischen Umsetzung war die Bildidee im Laufe der Jahrhunderte mancher Veränderung unterworfen. Aus der ursprünglich mythisch-religiösen, auf das Jenseits gerichteten Vorstellung des Mittelalters wird eine vom Humanismus und der Reformation beeinflusste Ständesatire und gesellschaftliche Morallehre der Renaissance. Der vorwiegend sinnbildhaften Verwendung der Totentanzvorstellung im Barock folgt eine stete Verweltlichung im Zeitalter der industriellen Revolution. An die Stelle des mittelalterlichen Ständereigen („Kaiser, König, Bettelmann") treten in neuerer Zeit Themen wie das mechanische Töten in Kriegen oder die Ängste vor neuen technischen Errungenschaften, wie der Eisenbahn und später des Autos und des Flugzeuges. Neben traditionellen Themen von überzeitlicher Bedeutung findet ebenso der Tod des Menschen im nuklearen Zeitalter Eingang in das Bildrepertoire der Totentanzdarstellungen.
