Many of the ideas I'll be sharing in this book stem from the latest research on happiness and positive psychology, so there is clinical evidence to back them up. These simple ideas have the capacity to change your life in a big way.
Thomas Merton said, "Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance and order and rhythm and harmony."
My book is by no means exhaustive, but it offers ways for you to incorporate balance, order, rhythm and harmony, and best of all, it gives you permission to take care of yourself. Some of the topics I'll be addressing are emotional self care, figuring our your identity, creating healthy boundaries, spirituality, solitude, secret sharing, appreciating beauty, play, exercise, forgiveness, grieving, what happens in counseling, the importance of connection, generosity and gratitude.
If you chose this book, at some deep level you must know that it is time to consider your own health and you are ready to enjoy your life and your family and find your way to that beautiful word: balance. Bold and frank, practical and helpful.

Sometimes you pick up a spiritual self-help and it's a lot of platitudes and pretty comments that barely scrape the surface, but not this one. The author knows her subject well, plus, she's lived through getting in a healthier place by following her own advice, and shares what works and doesn't work. She gives practical steps toward things like setting boundaries with toxic people, what forgiveness really means, and offers practical exercises with lists of ideas to start on your own journey to being happier. There, I said, it and I'm happy I did! Yes, it's OK to seek happiness, and RENEWED is a great place to start.

A Practical Guide to Taking Care of Yourself

Most women are very nurturing by nature. They are very good at looking after and taking care of others. However, too many neglect to take care of themselves. The specific reasons why women fail to take care of themselves vary greatly. The truth is that most reasons given are not valid. You really need to take care of yourself first. If you fail to take care of yourself, eventually you will not be able to take care of others.
Lucille Zimmerman has written an easy to read, well-organized book, targeted to Christian women with the purpose of helping them understand the importance of and the specific ways of taking better care of themselves. Even though the specific audience is Christian women, that does not mean that others cannot benefit from the principles put forth in this book. This book can be a very positive influence for those not of the Christian faith. The principles also apply to men.
Renewed is all about ways to heal emotional wounds. We all suffer emotional wounds as we grow up. Unless we specifically develop ways to cope with these emotional scars, we will carry that baggage throughout our lives. In mild cases it can just be a drag on life. In extreme cases the depression can be debilitating. The goal of Renewed is to teach us how to deal with these wounds and live the best life possible by taking care of our emotional needs.
The book takes a very logical approach to emotional self-care. Ms. Zimmerman deals with the steps to find out who you are and your purpose on earth. One of the most difficult problems most people deal with is setting of boundaries. Too often we allow others to infringe on our time, energy and personal boundaries. There are several other chapters devoted to specific topics and techniques on good self-care including: Play, Exercise, Grief, Counseling and Connection.
Throughout the book, Ms. Zimmerman provides additional helpful resources - including books and Online talks. One that everyone should watch is the TED talk by Brene Brown.
Ms. Zimmerman is a Licensed Professional Counselor and shares what she has learned from her own personal experiences and from working with clients. She is very honest and open in sharing her own personal life. Too often we hide behind a shield of trying to be perfect. One of the more valuable lessons in the book is that we are all flawed. We all have faults and trying to hide or ignore them only leads to more emotional pain.
While there is a lot of spiritual renewal shared in the book, Ms. Zimmerman is very frank about the limits of faith. She challenges the ministers to recognize that at times faith alone will not solve emotional problems. This is one of the more powerful lessons in the book. Waiting on Devine intervention can lead to needless additional emotional suffering.
I would suggest that you read the book and then go through it again to see how you can apply the principles to your life. You will gain the most benefit by actually putting the concepts in this book into action.

Refreshing, practical and inspiring book!

I finished this terrific book in three days, and love Lucille Zimmerman's honest writing! She draws the reader in with real life stories and practical ways to create calmness in a stressed out world. For anyone struggling with forgiveness, chapter ten will change your life. I highly recommend "Renewed!"
