About the Author
Sojourner Truth, born into slavery in the late 1790s as Isabella Baumfree, was the first African-American woman to win a court case when she reclaimed her son from the man who sold him back into slavery after his emancipation. After changing her name, Truth travelled as a Methodist preacher and spoke out regularly on behalf of the abolitionist cause. In 1851, at the Ohio's Women Rights Convention, Truth delivered her most well-known speech "Ain't I a Woman?" During her lifetime, Truth spoke out about many causes, including women's suffrage, prison reform, property rights for former slaves, and she encouraged African-Americans to enlist in the Union Army. Her activism led her to make connections with many of her contemporary abolitionists such as Harriet Beecher Stowe and Frances Gage. In 1850, Truth's dictated her memoir, The Narrative of Sojourner Truth, to her friend Olive Gilbert and the title was soon met with acclaim by abolitionist readers and supporters. Truth died in 1883 and was buried alongside her family in Battle Creek, Michigan.

Bismarcks Gründe sich vorerst vehement gegen eine deutsche Kolonialpolitik zu entscheiden sind recht eindeutig. Die Lage des Deutschen Reiches in Europa verbot eine Provokation neuer Konfliktfelder und auch der ökonomische Zweck staatlicher Kolonien erschloss sich dem Reichskanzler nicht. Die Frage nach der Kehrtwende von 1884/85, die den entscheidenden Startschuss staatlichen Kolonialengagements bildete, ist nach wie vor Gegenstand eines ungelösten Rätsels. Trotz Saturiertheitserklärung und mehrfach betonter ablehnender Haltung gegenüber einem Kolonialerwerb setzte Bismarck seine Grundüberzeugung– scheinbar- vorübergehend außer Kraft. Worin liegen die politische Kehrtwende und der Übergang zu einer staatlichen Kolonialpolitik begründet? Vor allem außenpolitische Überlegungen und Konsequenzen dieser Entscheidung sollen Gegenstand dieser Arbeit sein, aber auch die untrennbare Verknüpfung zwischen Bismarcks Außen- und Innenpolitik. Bisherige historiographische Erklärungsmodelle, unter besonderer Fokussierung der Kronprinzenthese, sollen dargestellt und einer kritischen Analyse unterzogen werden. Zuvor jedoch soll auch Bismarcks Kolonialskepsis nicht unbeachtet bleiben und mögliche Ursachen herausgearbeitet werden weswegen sich der Reichskanzler trotz der ständig wachsenden Kolonialbegeisterung im Reich gegen den Erwerb formeller Kolonien bis etwa 1883 so vehement gesträubt hatte.

Can someone explain this?

There are quite a few books (on Amazon in general) but particularly on the subject of Ulster Protestants that are apparently out of print in hard copies, but yet have digital copies available. The only problem is, it would seem this is how the publisher (or author) is able to gouge the reader by charging extremely high prices for a DIGITAL copy. I think this one is listed at $80-something dollars, for a DIGITAL download?!?! It's not even a real copy, it's digital! How do you justify this? I have seen many other digital titles with similar prices. Once the book is scanned into digital format, there is no other work to be done. How can Amazon justify allowing publishers and authors to rip off readers like this? Or even worse, prevent people from being able to read important historical information by making the prices out of the reach of most buyers. This must really change, there is no justification for charging more than $20-30 tops for a digital book. Don't get me started on the price of digital textbooks either....

A century later, Josephine Lang, a prodigiously talented pianist and dedicated composer, participated at various times  in the German Romantic world of lieder through her important arts salon. Lastly, the twentieth century brought forth two exceptional women: Baroness Maria Bach, a composer and pianist of twentieth-century Vienna's upper bourgeoisie and its brilliant musical milieu in the era of Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Arnold Schoenberg, and Erich Korngold; and Ann Schein, a brilliant and dauntless American piano prodigy whose career, ongoing today though only partially recognized, led her to study with the legendary virtuosos Arthur Rubinstein and Myra Hess.
 
Mining musical autographs, unpublished letters and press reviews, interviews, and music archives in the United States and Europe, Porter probes each musician's social and economic status, her education and musical training, the cultural expectations within the traditions and restrictions of each woman's society, and other factors. About the Author

Tom Avery grew up in Lewisham and trained as a primary teacher at the University of Greenwich. He taught in South London for two years, and then in inner-city Birmingham. He is now co-ordinator of English, Communication and Language at a primary school in Kentish Town, London. He loves working with young people, helping them to develop their interests and encouraging them to think about the world around them. The issues of street crime and unaccompanied refugee children, addressed in Too Much Trouble, affect the lives of many of the children he's met through his work. Avery lives in North London with his wife and young son.
