The City (City, The), by Stella Gemmell

The City is ancient, layers upon layers. Once a thriving metropolis, it sprawled beyond its bounds, inciting endless wars and creating a barren wasteland of what was once green and productive.

In the center of the City lives the emperor, a man in his prime though he should be very old. Some grimly speculate that he is no longer human, if he ever was. A small number have come to the desperate conclusion that the only way to stop the war is to end the emperor’s unnaturally long life.

From the mazelike sewers below the City to the blood-soaked fields of battle, the rebels pin their hopes on one man—Shuskara. The emperor’s former general, he was betrayed long ago and is believed to be dead. But he has survived, hiding from his immortal foe. The time has come for him to engage in one final battle to free the City from the creature who dwells at its heart, pulling the strings that keep the land drenched in gore.

From Booklist
Stella Gemmell, who finished husband David’s historical novel Troy after he died in 2006, offers up an intriguing solo effort. Set in an eternally-at-war ancient city, the novel features a quintet of disparate characters: Fell Lee, a warrior with seriously conflicted loyalties; Indaro, daughter of one of the City’s powerful families; Bartellus, a legendary military commander who was forced into hiding in the City’s sewers; and Elija and Emly, a young brother and sister who have spent years living in the sewers. Some people believe the only way to stop the never-ending war the City has been fighting is to kill the allegedly immortal emperor, but will this free the City or plunge it once and for all into chaos? Having constructed a richly detailed world full of vividly drawn characters, Gemmell sets up a number of puzzles for the reader to solve—including whether the book is set in an alternate past, or a far-flung future—and as we move through the sprawling story, the pieces begin to fall into place. Although a sequel is not mandatory (the book can work as a stand-alone), one would be most welcome. --David Pitt

Review

“Exciting, intelligent, emotional.”—SFFWorld

“Gemmell proves more than capable of standing on her own with this powerful epic fantasy…Richly textured prose and settings distinguish this novel, and fans of grimdark fantasy will hope it spawns many sequels.”—Publishers Weekly

“Every chapter ends in another question, making it nearly impossible to put the book down…The characters’ complexities are a marvel, making them relatable and believable.”—RT Book Reviews

“[Gemmell] is an excellent writer…A gripping climax and wonderful multidimensional characters…A new and very powerful voice in the world of fantasy.”—Parmenion Books

Good, but not quite the same
By JPS
First posted on Amazon.co.uk on 28 April 2013

This is Stella Gemmell's first book written entirely on her own, and it is a good one. There are a number of features that are similar to those that can be found in some of her late husband's books but also some differences, and perhaps some problems.

As in David Gemmell's books, this one is loosely built around history. Although the plot is set in an entirely fictional world, the City and the Empire around seemed (to me at least) to be largely derived from the City of Byzantium and the Byzantine Empire. Several other themes and types of characters which are present in previous books are also used.

One theme is the decline and decay of a once great Empire that is ruled by the remnants of an alien race - think of Echoes of the Great Song. Similar character types include the old general, past his prime and his glory, who makes a final comeback to save the sum of things, and several types of swordsman and swordswomen, noble by their deeds and, sometimes, their origins. Also included is the enduring and fiercely loyal giant (here a "northerner" which made me think of Varangian warriors) and the courtesan, among others.

The plot and the characters are however also quite different, and so is the book's tone. I will not mention much about the plot, to avoid spoilers, and will just mention that the Empire is locked into an endless war with most of its neighbours, a war that it is slowly losing, which its Emperor, who is called the Immortal, is determined to win just like all of the previous wars. Add to this is a whole atmosphere of treason, intrigues and political assassinations and you get a rather powerful, thrilling and action-packed cocktail which you will have trouble in putting down until you have finished the last page.

The book's tone and ending are generally rather sombre and somewhat pessimistic. The descriptions and sections about the City's underground life and environment are particularly horrific and griping. The characters are often not what and who they seem to be. Overall, I very much enjoyed this book and spent most of the week-end reading it non-stop. I do have a couple of reservations, however, with regards to the plot. At times, I found it unnecessarily complicated. I also was not entirely convinced with some of the "evil" characters' regrets. Unlike "Echoes of the Great Song", for instance, the disasters that occurr in the book are entirely the responsibility of the City's rulers. These appear as rather unsympathetic, cruel and inhuman, to put it mildly. They are driven by their own ambitions and seem to cara little for what can happen to their subjects.

I would certainly recommend this interesting book, especially for Gemmell fans, and I would rate it a solid four stars, but not quite five.

Okay, but not David Gemmell
By Kelvin Kwa
If life was a David Gemmell novel then my expectations would be that the real genuis behind David Gemmell's work was Stella. Unfortunately, if The City is any indication, then that is not the case. Whilst she did a good job finishing of the Troy books, the City is , thus far, failing to captivate my attention for more than a few pages at a time. Don't get me wrong, the prose and flow of language is good, its just that, the story, the characters, the situations have not hooked me in and kept me turning the pages as David once did.
I haven't finished the book. In fact, I've only read about 20% but its still not moving for me. I'm not invested. David Gemmell could do that within the first 2 pages of his novels.
Forgive me. I so much wanted The City to be a new chapter for the name of Gemmell. I can only pray that I am mistaken as I finish reading the book and any other Stella Gemmell novels to come because I can make this statement; one book won't stop me from hoping the best for the next.

Interesting Read but not quite brilliant!
By Lilkillacupcake
Another Netgalley find. I actually received this book as an arc at the time, unfortunately this review is coming to you after the release. Not my usual genre, thought I would try something different.

This was a big read. I must admit it took me a while to get through. I found it easier to get into some scenes more than I did others. This is probably what took me so long. But even still, the book kept drawing me back, I wanted to see what else was going to happen. I really thought this book was great. But, there was just something about it that can't make me give it more than 3 cupcakes. Some parts I would find myself reading in bigger chunks, I just needed to know what was going to happen next. Other parts just didn't hold my attention so well, I found myself really just reading through these parts in hope that I was going to get back to the story and characters of who I really wanted to read more about.

There are many different timelines and different views from various characters. Most are very skillfully woven together, some however could have done with that little bit more attention. The world building and storytelling was well done and I found myself quickly interested in a few of the characters and their storyline.

I do feel though that it is worth a read. If you do decide to read it and find yourself in the same situation as I did, persevere.

Congratulations to Stella Gemmell, may you have many future successes!

Ancient Moon Wisdom: The Kabbalistic Wheel of Astro Mystery and its Relationship to the Human Experience, by Miriam Maron

Long ago, mystics believed that along with every renewal of the phases of the Moon came shifts within the souls of all stones, plants, animals, and yes, even humans. This book highlights these shifts and explains how we are affected by them, how to tap into them for wholesome living, and how to engage obstacles we might encounter along the way. Drawing from a rich treasury of ancient Hebraic mystery wisdom and her many years of experience as a spiritual healer and counselor, Miriam Maron introduces us to the remarkable interplay between the months of the yearly cycle and tribal archetypes in the Hebraic tradition. She discusses each month’s corresponding animal, mineral, and plant totems. In Ancient Moon Wisdom, one will discover important life lessons from the histories and mythologies surrounding these archetypes and the deeper meanings behind each of their corresponding months—all of which will prove helpful in one’s personal unfolding.

Review
No exaggeration: this book is profound, warm, and easy to read. I learned something new in every single paragraph. Each year I select a book, buy a batch, and give them to my family and friends. No question: this is it! (Arthur Kurzweil, author of Kabbalah for Dummies and On the Road with Rabbi Steinsaltz)

A work of wisdom that takes the reader far beyond the reaches of the Moon into realms of deeper understanding about the archetypes that live and act within each of us. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to deepen their connection with self, Earth, and Spirit. (Rabbi Zalman M. Schachter-Shalomi, D.H.L., Professor Emeritus of Religion, Temple University)

Blends clinical experience with mystery wisdom and takes you on a journey that heals the soul. (Carl Hammerschlag, M.D., author of The Dancing Healers)

A sophisticated shamanic Hebraic understanding of the subtle, living system of Hebrew astrology. . . . This book is a shamanic jewel that is well worth reading. (Gabriel Cousens, M.D., author of Torah as a Guide to Enlightenment)

Finally, a book you will want to refer to again and again for practical guidance and insight as you walk the gauntlet of your life journey. (Rabbi Gershon Winkler, Ph.D., author of Magic of the Ordinary)

We use Rabbi Maron's book to start our Rosh Chodesh ...
By Daisey Love
We use Rabbi Maron's book to start our Rosh Chodesh group each month. I share Miriam's first three or four paragraphs to set the tone and intention for the monthly group. Rabbi Maron's deep insights, knowledge of Torah, Talmud, Midrash, and Kabbalah all combine to give one knowledge not often spoken, about the significance of each Hebrew month/moon.
AND, Rabbi Maron has footnotes which one can research, go to to read more about her insights and wisdom.
This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone seeking the deepest spiritual meaning of Judaism.

I love this book!
By FireSign
This book has the kabbalistic information for each moon, and I haven't seen this information summarized like this in other books.

Here is the table contents:

The Moons
Nee'sahn (March 16 - May 8)
Iyyar (April 10 - June 8)
See'vahn (May 10 - July 8)
Tamuz (June 9 - August 6)
Ahv 9 (July 8 - September 5)
Elul (August 7 - October 6)
Tish'ray (September 5 - November 3)
Chesh'von (Ocoteber 5 - December 2)
Kees'lev (November 3 - January 2)
Tey'vet (December 2 - January 28)
Sh'vaht (January 1 - February 28)
Adar (February 11 - March 28, and January 31 - March 10 in leap years)
Second Adar (March 2 - April 8 in leap years)
Index

The Moons, the first chapter, talks about things such as astrology in Judaism, how to calculate your Hebrew birthdate, and why the lunar calendar is so important in Judaism. Each chapter of the book has the meaning of the name of the month, the attribute, tribe, tribal totem, tribal stone, tribal herb, house, zodiac, letter, tribal flag, and tribal direction. All of this is heavily annotated with sources from Torah, Mishnah, Talmud, Zohar, and other Judaic references, i.e. it's not just something she made up. The tendencies and energies of each month is discussed, including the opportunities and challenges that appear with those energies, and what the ancient Hebrews taught about it.

I found this book very interesting and enlightening, and will be using it in a Rosh Chodesh (New Moon) group. For those of you who have had readings or are students of Rabbi Miriam Maron, you will probably recognize much of the material. This is the book we've been waiting for!

I did ask her why there is an overlap in dates for the months. Her answer was because it is a lunar calendar. "Therefore your birth date on the solar calendar reckoning will rarely fall at the same time as your original Hebrew birth date, and you could be an entire month off at times. This is why it is simpler and actually more accurate to celebrate your Hebrew birthday, because it will always be the same Hebraic lunar date no matter the year."

This is very accessible, and a great reference as well.

Review
“[McNally is] as amusing and rich as Dorothy Sayers’ great creation, Lord Peter Wimsey.” —Cosmopolitan

About the Author
Lawrence Sanders (1920–1998) was the New York Times bestselling author of more than forty mystery and suspense novels. The Anderson Tapes, completed when he was fifty years old, received an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for best first novel. His prodigious oeuvre encompasses the Edward X. Delaney, Archy McNally, and Timothy Cone series, along with his acclaimed Commandment books. Stand-alone novels include Sullivan's Sting and Caper. Sanders remains one of America’s most popular novelists, with more than fifty million copies of his books in print.

From AudioFile
Its quick pace and vocal clarity make this tale of murder and money easy and enjoyable to follow. In a light, jaunty baritone Boyd Gaines captures the light-hearted Archy McNally, who has been expelled from Yale Law for streaking and is acting for a third time as problem-solver for friend and foe. Gaines flattens his tone and broadens a Midwestern accent to create the local sheriff. For the villains he sharpens his voice. The women's voices are softer and breathy and, in one case, loaded with a Southern accent. The variety in Gaines's delivery enables the listener to identify the characters quickly and to delight in the details of Palm Beach society. M.G.S (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

This One's Got More Twists than a Chubby Checker CD...
By yygsgsdrassil
...Dapper Palm Beach PI Archy McNally has been requested by a monied client of his father's law firm to check the background of Theodosia Johnson, a beautiful neo socialite in the south Floridian circles, and soon to be married to an heir of a fortune...McNally cajoles, bribes with meals and pays off his many sources--caterers, barkeeps and newspapermen--but information about the lass starts coming in seemingly disconnected pieces, until the artist of a masterful portrait of Theodosia winds up with a knife in his throat and a stripper who seems to be into extortion gets a bullet thru her head and the rightful heir to the artist's estate is found strangled in her SUV under water. McNally falls for the mysterious lady (Madame X) further complicating things, and a creepy thug with Michigan plates on his Cadillac is seen once too often near several of these disconnected pieces. This is Sanders in his element--a likable, idiosyncratic, quippy fella (McNally--who may or may not be like the author) who has excesses very much like the real crooks against the backdrop of a glamorous area solving a heinous crime. While you read you can probably guess who ultimately is the culprit of the dastardly deeds, but the big, big fun is how Sanders chooses to get us to the punchline. A page turning enjoyable read for all....

An interesting murder mystery
By Fred Camfield
This is another in the series of books about Archie McNally, who carries out investigations for his father's law firm when he is not dashing about in his red Miata, hanging out at the Pelican Club, or pursuing various women. It is one of the earlier books in the series. The case starts out as a seemingly simply investigation into the background of a woman involved with the son of a wealthy client of the firm. Along the way there is a murdered artist who had painted the woman's portrait, the emotionally disturbed daughter of the artist, the son's ex-girlfriend from a topless car wash, the ex-girlfriend's nude dancer friend, a suspect "financial advisor," and a host of other character's including some of Archie's assortment of friends that carry forward from book to book. There is also the mysterious, untitled, missing painting. Overall, an intriguing whodunit, with a somewhat surprising ending.

They are just bitter because they didn't do the proper investigation into this book before purchasing it. Archy McNally would be ashamed. Buy this. Read this. Enjoy this. I known you will.

Direkte Zensur in China (German Edition), by Sarah Baumgartner

I am an agnostic person interested in religion and mythology from an academic point of view more than anything. From that point of view, these books are interesting to read and certainly more accessible than the bible for exploring the mythology of Christianity. Depending on their belief system, someone who is already a believer might potentially be offended by the idea offered in the introduction that the narrator is writing as god dictates.

This is the second book I have read by this author and I'm fairly sure I am reading them out of order. They each seem to have a theme but reading them out of order doesn't appear to negatively impact my studying experience.

Compared to the other book in this series that I read, this book feels very heavy handed. The early part is focused on rules and laws and justice and things that MUST be done. Perhaps the focus was intended to stay on imparting wisdom and these rules are well meant but the tone of the poems in this book brings out feelings of resentment and rebelliousness in me - things I didn't have in relation to the other book I read. Those feelings aren't conducive to academic study. I frequently had to set down my kindle and take a walk or do something else to restore a calm state of mind to continue.

Towards the end there seems to be poems focused on forgiveness and salvation. The tone does soften a bit there but it's too little, too late in the book. If this was not a paid review, I would have walked away from the book without completing it well before I got to the softer-toned messages. That would have been a mistake because some of the later poems had that same `deeper wisdom' aspect, as the poems in the other book I had read. On the other hand, as the majority of this was not something I'd read again, I would not recommend that a friend purchase it.

Added to my Library
By Eugene
As a pastor, I have found this book both informative and useful. The layout provides easy and quick reference when using for sermon notes and as an excellent review. God Speaks is also a good book for all from beginning to senior in religious studies and as a companion to the Bible.
I rated the book 5 out of 5 because of the ease in reading. Nothing confusing to mislead or redirect the reader. I will be adding it to my library as part of my religious studies. Mr. Eddy did a good job with keeping the book in line with the title. All through the book it is easy to see how God speak as his presence. Mr. Eddy did a fine job writing the book. I particularly like the layout in prose form which made reading it even more enjoyable. I did not find any errors with grammar or syntax which also made the book a pleasure to read.

To determine the price of the book, I referenced the many different books I own concerning religion. Most books fall above this price range. I would say anywhere between 9.99 and 14.99 is a fair price for the book.
I would certainly recommend the book to friends and family, especially to those seeking questions about God since the book provides easy to find and easy to understand answers to many questions posed to religious leaders. I would most likely buy the series of these books if there will be any to complete a well rounded library of religious books.

This Compost: Ecological Imperatives in American Poetry, by Jed Rasula

Poetry, for Jed Rasula, bears traces of our entanglement with our surroundings, and these traces define a collective voice in modern poetry independent of the more specific influences and backgrounds of the poets themselves. In This Compost Rasula surveys both the convictions asserted by American poets and the poetics they develop in their craft, all with an eye toward an emerging ecological worldview.

Rasula begins by examining poets associated with Black Mountain College in the 1950s--Charles Olson, Robert Creeley, and Robert Duncan--and their successors. But This Compost extends to include earlier poets like Robinson Jeffers, Ezra Pound, Louis Zukofsky, Kenneth Rexroth, and Muriel Rukeyser, as well as Clayton Eshleman, Gary Snyder, Michael McClure, and other contemporary poets. Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson also make appearances. Rasula draws this diverse group of poets together, uncovering how the past is a "compost" fertilizing the present. He looks at the heritage of ancient lore and the legacy of modern history and colonial violence as factors contributing to ecological imperatives in modern poetry.

This Compost restores the dialogue between poetic language and the geophysical, biological realm of nature that so much postmodern discourse has sought to silence. It is a fully developed, carefully argued book that deals with an underrepresented element in modern American culture, where the natural world and those who write about it have been greatly neglected in contemporary literary history and theory.

Review

Jed Rasula's insights are fresh and often exciting. This is an important book.

(Guy Davenport)

Jed Rasula has written a unique, carefully imbricated, and rewarding book that takes part in the poetic tradition it describes. This Compost is the first fully developed, carefully argued attempt at 'Green theory' in relation to American poetry.

(Paul Naylor author of Poetic Investigations: Singing the Holes in History)

This collage of American poetries proves to be a fertile ground for poetic investigation. . . . Rasula is a fine poet as well as a gifted scholar. As a result, his study reads as a long poem, taking the reader to places only poets have traveled.

(Choice)

A remarkable cross between scholarly study, literary anthology, and extended essay . . . A stimulating and useful exploration of environmental themes in American poetry, This Compost is an important contribution to the growth in explorations of what the journal Ecopoetics refers to in its masthead as the ‘creative-critical edges’ between poetry and ecology, or ‘the theory and praxis of deliberate earthlings.’ . . . [Rasula] convincingly explores the uninterrupted tissue of text, flesh and earth.

(ISLE)

This Compost is essential reading for those interested in ecopoetics. . . . The exploratory subjectivity of This Compost offers needed corrective to the sanitized, odorless, shrinkwrapped pastoral of nimby 'environmentalism'―as, rather than focus on 'nature,' Rasula emphasizes the 'need to reckon our own wild natures into any consideration of "nature" as such.' It also makes for damned good reading. Remember that, since the author has not aerated this compost pile, leaving that up to us, it is particularly hot―stir well and use sparingly.

(Ecopoetics)

I've enjoyed, and learned a lot, from a very recent book, Jed Rasula's This Compost: Ecological Imperatives in American Poetry. . . . In terms of literature-and-nature, it picks up where Lawrence Buell's instructive book (The Environmental Imagination) left off and goes way into the territory of both ecology (in the most precise sense) and the adventurous side of contemporary politics.

(ISLE)

Rasula has done the admirably poetic thing of making his meter match his meaning, employing an exceedingly unconventional form for an academic book, but one which fits his subject and prose style well. . . . Overall, Rasula's book opens up a wide area for discussion of the relationship, if one exists, between 20th-century American poetry and the field of ecocriticism.

(Virginia Quarterly Review)

Illuminating of each bit of poetry in its connections to the others, empathic without lapsing into hagiography, critically humble, it is a convincing demonstration that a way of reading in which we ‘uncenter our minds from ourselves / . . . unhumanize our views a little,’ as Jeffers puts it in Credo, is not only truer to texts concerned to do the same thing, but better, and worth emulating in our extended community of words.

(Contemporary Literature)

About the Author
Jed Rasula is Helen S. Lanier Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Georgia. He is the author of "The American Poetry Wax Museum: Reality Effects, 1940-1990" and coauthor of "Imagining Language: An Anthology."

pretentious claptrap
By Very Jones
I have spent (wasted?) a frustrating hour with this volume and still cannot make sense of it. Open the book to any page and find unfathomable lines such as this: "every poem has an alter ego, an animal body as secret sharer of its respiratory distress." Or this: "America is resolved in a 'phantom of the moment,' a thought in one man's mind, a trope that comes to tyrannize the rounded world." I only wish This Compost truly were compost-able; then, at least, my plants might benefit from it. This Compost, in my opinion, is needlessly abstruse.
