McNally's Folly

I've read every Lawrence Sanders book written, and absolutely loved the Archy series. I was devastated when Lawrence Sanders passed away, wondering if I'd ever enjoy Archy's antics again. The last book, and McNally's Folly were both throughly enjoyable. I just can't get enough of Archy, Al Rogoff and all the zany characters in Palm Beach. Mr. Lardo does an excellent job of carrying on a storyline that makes me smile and giggle out loud at Archy's little adventures. If you're a McNally fan you won't be dissappointed with Vincent Lardo keeping Archy alive. P.S. The Hampton Affair by Vincent Lardo is also excellent. I'm looking forward to his new one coming soon, and hopefully some more of Archy McNally.

ANOTHER GREAT MCNALLY STORY!

OK, OK, it's not Lawrence Sanders. He was great and no one can replace him but this is still a great book. If you love McNally and his cast of S. FL characters you will like this book. If you're only interested in the originals by Sanders that's fine - skip it. I for one love the settings and the characters (and their interaction) and found the book fun and enjoyable. In other words it's a typcial McNally story. Buy it and enjoy it. McNally lives on.

Surprise Surprise

When I saw Vincent Lardos name on the cover of this one, my first reaction was "Oh No! What happened to Lawrence Sanders?" I immediatly feared the worst, but I bought the book and decided to read it with an open mind. My biggest surprise was finding out that Mr. Lardo also penned the last McNally book and I hadn't even realized it. With that said, I found the latest book to be quite good, following Archy's exploits as he unravels a mystery involving the cast and crew of a Palm Beach production of "Arsenic and Old Lace". A very appropriate play considering the fact that cast members keep passing away via arsenic in their drinks. While Mr. Nardo's Archy lacks a bit of the swish that characterized Lawrence Sander's character, I found the book a good read. With Sander's passing we can all be thankful that Archy continues to grace our bookshelves, and I, for one, look forward to the continuing exploits of our hero. "One never knows, do one?

Gilbert Keith Chesterton (29 May 1874 – 14 June 1936) better known as G. K. Chesterton, was an English writer, lay theologian, poet, philosopher, dramatist, journalist, orator, literary and art critic, biographer, and Christian apologist. Chesterton is often referred to as the "prince of paradox." Time magazine, in a review of a biography of Chesterton, observed of his writing style: "Whenever possible Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegories—first carefully turning them inside out." Chesterton is well known for his fictional priest-detective Father Brown, and for his reasoned apologetics. Even some of those who disagree with him have recognized the wide appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton, as a political thinker, cast aspersions on both Progressivism and Conservatism, saying, "The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected." Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox" Christian, and came to identify this position more and more with Catholicism, eventually converting to Roman Catholicism from High Church Anglicanism. George Bernard Shaw, Chesterton's "friendly enemy" according to Time, said of him, "He was a man of colossal genius." Biographers have identified him as a successor to such Victorian authors as Matthew Arnold, Thomas Carlyle, Cardinal John Henry Newman, and John Ruskin.

Ridiculous, Hilarious and Profound!

This was my first read of Chesterton. After seeing him quoted and referred to in so many other books I had been reading, I decided it was time to check out his actual work. I was not disappointed, and feel like I have discovered some hidden treasure!

Beautifully written, mixing the ridiculous with the profound, I found myself underlining many times in this book. G.K. Chesterton's main character Innocent Smith managed to restore so much joy to even my life. Such is the goal of this character, to restore the joy of being alive. He manages to achieve this in a manner that many consider childlike or quite certainly insane! Innocent Smith aids other members of the tale in discovering the meaning of death; "It isn't only meant to remind us of a future life, but to remind us of a present life, too." A reader walks away from this work, realizing the beauty of the birds, the sweet smell of the flowers and the delight of one's own romantic love. I find myself indebted to this work for helping to restore my joy of living.

I did discover one difficulty in starting this read. I am so accustom to reading such easily digested material, it took me several attempts to actually get past the first three pages. I thought to myself, 'how many adjectives does he need!' After crossing this hurdle, I was so delighted by the rich descriptions as one viewing a fine piece of art.

I highly suggest this work with 5 out of 5 stars and am looking forward to reading more of Chesterton.

Man, O Manalive

This is my favorite GKC novel. Chesterton writes a grown up novel about those who must become like little children to enter the Kingdom of God. Chesterton treats each mundane moment as momentous and the repetitious as startlingly new. Life for him is adventure and joy and he can't stand to see anyone not joining him.
The Spirit of God is the wind that moves throughout the entire book and stirs up the lives of all it touches.
I'd love to see this book as a play.

Stop Taking Yourself So Seriously!

Whether you're new to Chesterton or have read everything else he has written I cannot recommmend this book highly enough. In my opinion this is the best of his more serious allegorical novels in that the meaning is not hidden and confused as it is in some of his other works, but is right there ready to smack you in the face. Chesterton was always concerned with the problems facing the modern man (and while he wrote at the turn of the 19th century his "modern man" is still as modern today as it was then). The increasing societal pressures facing both the Christian and the non-Christian alike were then as now forcing people to view the world with a serious and somber tone, always looking to their survival in a world where absolutes were lacking and authority was no longer to looked to for answers. In this dismal worldview it is all too easy for man to get so caught up in the day to day struggles that he forgets that he is alive, that he is a living breathing person with a will of his own and not merely an automaton of a crushing society. He is alive, and that is a gerat thing!
While the story is rather strait forward and not nearly as interesting in its own light as some of his other novels, this book is so full of life that the reader cannot help but want to jump up and down at times at the reemergence of joy in the lives of the characters. While the "irresponsible" lifestyle prtrayed in the book should not be taken as a realistic alternative to the monotony of life that has clutched so many, the exposure of stodginess for what it really is should be a warning to anyone who has ever found themselves snearing at the strange behaviors of children or getting too caught up in our increasingly materialistic culture.
While not as overtly religious as some of his other books this book is perhaps most aplicable to those people who are too religious, whatever their philosophy. Those who have such a low opinion of the world and of man that they have forgoten that while their is evil in the world, the world was created good and their is still much to be found here. Herangezogen wurden dabei Dialoge aus der US-Fernsehserie "Gilmore Girls". Diese Arbeit soll sich mit der linguistischen Gesprächsanalyse beschäftigen, genauer
mit der Theorie, dass Menschen, während sie miteinander kommunizieren, ihre
soziale Identität zum Ausdruck bringen.
Das Wort Identität bezeichnet laut dem Duden die Echtheit einer Person, das
bedeutet, die genaue Übereinstimmung der Bezeichnung einer Person mit dem, was
sie wirklich ist. So wird in der Kriminalistik eine Person identifiziert, indem man die
Übereinstimmung ihrer Person im Zusammenhang mit einer kriminellen Handlung
feststellt.1
Bei der Definition von Identität ist zu beachten, dass der Mensch nicht einzeln
betrachtet werden kann, sondern immer als Teil einer sozialen Gruppe betrachtet
werden muss. Durch den Kontakt und den Vergleich zu anderen Individuen ist es
möglich, dass ein Mensch das Individuelle seiner Identität erlebt. Nach meinem
Verständnis wird der Zusammenhang zwischen dem Erleben der individuellen
Identität und dem Einfluss der sozialen Gruppe als soziale Identität bezeichnet.
Dagegen abgrenzen muss man den Begriff der sozialen Rolle einer Person. Die
Bedeutung von Rolle ist laut Duden die Gestalt die jemand verkörpert. Innerhalb der
Gesellschaft ist es eine Stellung oder Funktion, die ein Mensch inne hat.
Zum Beispiel bin ich zugleich Studentin an der Universität, Arbeitnehmerin in meinem
Nebenjob und Tochter und Schwester in meiner Familie. All diese Rollen, die
abhängig sind von der gegebenen Umgebung oder Situation, stimmen mit mir als
einzelnem Wesen überein.
Ich denke also, dass die soziale Identität die größere Einheit ist, die sich aus
mehreren sozialen Rollen zusammens

Robby weiß, dass damit sein Leben zerstört würde, denn ein zweiter Einsatz in diesem grausamsten aller Kriege würde ihn sein Leben lang verfolgen. Die Traumatisierung hat ihn bereits jetzt erreicht. Eine Hilfe aus dieser Situation bietet sich an, indem er in der DDR auskundschaften soll, wie ein Demokratisierungsprozess eingeleitet werden kann. Zuvor lebt er einige Zeit im westlichen Teil Deutschlands und erlebt hier ansatzweise, wie die Gesellschaft ihre Stärken und Schwächen offenbart. In der DDR gerät er schon bald mit der Staatssicherheit aneinander. Er erlebt am eigenen Leibe, warum die Menschen eine solche Angst vor dem Geheimapparat haben. Nicht einmal innerhalb der eigenen Familie kann man sich sicher sein, nicht bespitzelt zu werden. Die Brutalität bezieht sich nicht nur auf körperliche Qualen, sondern vielmehr auf seelische Grausamkeiten. Traumatisierte Stasi-Opfer finden sich auch Jahrzehnte später zu Hunderten wieder. Robby steht in der DDR nicht allein. Neben seiner Familie ist ihm ein Agent zur Seite gestellt, den Robby natürlich nicht kennt. Er kann nur ahnen, dass er einen Schutzengel hat. Dennoch wird für ihn das Leben in der DDR immer gefährlicher. Er versucht in die Bundesrepublik zurück zu kehren. Das ist schwerer als gedacht. Aber nun tauchen weitere Schwierigkeiten auf. Sein Wunsch, wieder in den USA leben zu können, wird von den Behörden erschwert. Robby ist jetzt Deutscher. Damit will er sich nicht zufrieden geben. Endlich ist er wieder in Amerika. Aber dort erwarten ihn weitere Schwierigkeiten. Robby musste sein Lebensumfeld oftmals wechseln. Er konnte sein gewohntes zu Hause nirgendwohin mitnehmen. Auch sein Denken erforderte ständig Umstellungen. Sein "Schneckenhaus" konnte er nie mitnehmen.

Ich habe bereits in sehr jungen Jahren (34) die Leitung einer Schule übernommen. Ältere Kollegen haben mich damals gewarnt: "Das wird eine sehr lange Zeit werden." Ich habe die Herausforderung angenommen. Heute bin ich sehr froh darüber und bereue meine Entscheidung nicht. Die lange Zeit ist notwendig, um eine Richtung zu finden und Schule zu führen. Vielleicht ist im dritten Teil des Buches zu spüren, was ich für diese Zeit empfunden habe. Andere Aufgaben lagen im politischen Bereich, sowie die jahrelange Mitarbeit in einer Gewerkschaft. In Fachzeitschriften wurden einige Artikel von mir veröffentlicht.

Nach einem geschichtlichen Abriss über die Entstehungsumstände, wird Martin Scorseses Film Taxi Driver von 1976 analytisch betrachtet, der gerade durch seine narrative und ästhetische Form als exemplarisches Beispiel für diese erneuerte Regisseur-Generation steht. Das New Hollywood (‚Hollywood-Renaissance' oder auch ‚Neue amerikanische Welle') führte in den 70er Jahren zur Neuinterpretation der bestehenden Genres und wurde durch gesellschaftliche Veränderungen, der Neuordnung der großen amerikanischen Filmfabriken (Major Companies) und vor allem auch die französische ‚Nouvelle Vague' geprägt. (Taxi Driver ist dem Film Noir Genre zuzuordnen, worauf aber in der vorliegenden Hausarbeit nicht weiter eingegangen wird.)
