Pulp fiction

Smartly written trash, no doubt - but trash nonetheless. About 1 million words of it!

From all the coincidences, one would think that there were only about 2000 people living in England at the time. So, while the core plot is certainly compelling, it is so forced that, overall, it seems quite ridiculous (especially towards the end, starting with the "Tempest"). And while most of the side characters are likable, funny, entertaining or sometimes even adorable, they are also very much one-dimensional, with only Aunt Betsey being perhaps somewhat of an exception. David himself, on the other hand, seems a bit of a prick to me, although I have the feeling that this was not Dickens' intention (though perhaps I'm wrong, and that was the whole point, maybe?). In any case, I have no clue why exactly he seems to be so universally liked, according to his own account at least!

By far the best aspect of the book is Dickens' style of writing and excellent command of the English language. The book is really quite beautifully written, funny at times and mostly entertaining (if on a shallow level). I'm quite sure I wouldn't read it again though.

Already a great joy of the 2013 baseball season

"Six months out of every year," laments Joe Hardy's wife Meg in the musical Damn Yankees, "I might as well be made of stone." It is a feeling all too true for the wives of many baseball junkies. We love the game, we love watching the game, we love debating the game, and we love reading about the game. That is why Ron Kaplan's new compendium, 501 BASEBALL BOOKS FANS MUST READ BEFORE THEY DIE, which arrives just in time for Opening Day, is already a great joy of the 2013 baseball season.

Any lover of baseball appreciates numbers, and Kaplan has some important numbers on his side when making the case for the books that appear on his list. The Hall of Fame in Cooperstown boasts a library of more than 10,000 volumes, and Kaplan has 2,000 of them in his personal collection. There is no doubt that even a list as large as 500 books may omit someone's personal favorite. He makes no claim that the books he has selected are the best. Instead, he hopes that his list will provide an entry into the world of baseball literature as well as connecting subjects not normally associated with the game. Books are divided by subjects selected by Kaplan himself and include a brief but comprehensive summary providing substantial information for readers. One of the joys of reading the list comes from discovering previously unknown baseball books. When you sit down to read it, keep a paper and pencil handy to allow you to jot down titles for the new books you will discover and certainly want to read.

The categories are indicative of the variety of books Kaplan considers. Some are obvious and include reference, biographies, memoirs and history. But categories such as pop culture, business and international may surprise readers. It is not important how the books are grouped; finding the various titles is really all that matters.

Given Kaplan's massive undertaking and his clear statement that his choices are personal, I am reluctant to take issue with his selections. But any book about baseball certainly understands that it will provoke a "hot-stove" discussion. The fiction section here fails to include SHOELESS JOE by W.P. Kinsella, the novel that spawned the movie Field of Dreams. Kaplan includes at least two Kinsella short story collections, but the absence of SHOELESS JOE left me shaking my head. Equally disappointing was not including any of the books by John Tunis in the section discussing books for young readers. Tunis wrote masterful baseball novels that often covered the game of life in addition to the game of baseball. Certainly, THE KID COMES BACK, focusing on soldiers returning from war, merited a mention.

I know that pointing out a few omissions is a cheap shot, and I apologize. But fans who argue the relative merits and abilities of Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, Ken Griffey and dozens of other ballplayers across the generations will certainly understand that 501 BASEBALL BOOKS FANS MUST READ BEFORE THEY DIE was written to stimulate discussion among those whose love of baseball is equaled only by their love of reading about baseball. Ron Kaplan's book is a giver as well as a keeper. Get one for yourself, and buy one for every person you know who loves the game and the books that herald its greatness.

Make it 502 -- read "501 Baseball Books Fans Must Read Before They Die"

If you love baseball and appreciate good writing then you will enjoy reading "501 Baseball Books Fans Must Read before They Die." Ron Kaplan has assembled a catalogue of 501 books he calls "an entry into the fascinating world of baseball literature, with its connections to other areas one might not normally associate with the game: fiction, history, science, the arts, music...."

He shows this by selecting, and briefly discussing, baseball books in 15 different categories (analysis, biography, ballparks, behind the scenes, business, fiction, history, instructional, international, minor leagues, pop culture, reference, statistics, umpires, and young readers). He writes with wit, engaging the reader in a voice that lets you know you're in the capable hands of someone who has spent a lifetime studying both the nuances of the game and the books that have come to define it. As a result, "501" is that rare handbook that can either be used as a reference guide to find, for example, the definitive book written about umpires ("As They See `Em"), or read from cover to cover without feeling you're trying to stir cement with your eye lashes.

To his credit, Kaplan is objective in his choices as to which books to include. Although he makes it clear he's not assembling the 501 best baseball books ever written (he acknowledges that is a highly subjective task at best) he hits all the classics. And he deftly lets you know how he feels about them. For example, if you read between the lines you can tell he views "Sandy Koufax: A Lefty's Legacy" as well-deserving of its status within the pantheon of great baseball biographies, but he has his doubts about the "NY Times" selecting "The Art of Fielding" as a best fiction book of the year.

At times, I wished Kaplan let us know more about his take on a particular book rather than the specific content it covers. But on a historic basis, as electronic books grow in popularity, Kaplan's "501" will serve as an fine amalgamation of the first 150 years of baseball writing when cloth and paper were still king.

There is something to be found in "501" for everyone: young readers just beginning to dig into baseball's rich - but boundless -- literary history to know what to read, to the experienced reader who may be surprised to learn there is a book about nothing but baseball nicknames ("From Abba Dabba to Zorro") and that Bernard Malamud's classic, "The Natural," was his first novel.

A wonderful baseball reference book

There are thousands of baseball titles in the world, and Ron Kaplan has done the impossible: read, reviewed, and cataloged the best of the best. People often ask me to name my favorite baseball books. Well, they're all Kaplan's book now: The Great American Novel, Ball Four, The Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract, Moneyball, etc. Plus, Kaplan has profiled some less famous but no less wonderful titles, including The Catcher was a Spy, Cult Baseball Players, and hundreds of others. If you care about baseball literature, you have to buy this book.

About the Author
Ralph Salisbury is the 2015 recipient of the C.E.S. Wood Retrospective Award (celebrating a distinguished career in Oregon letters), the Rockefeller Bellagio Award in fiction, and the Northwest Poetry Award. His most recent books are Blind Pumper at the Well, The Indian Who Bombed Berlin, and Light from a Bullet Hole. Salisbury’s thirteen books evoke his Cherokee-Shawnee-Irish-English-American heritage.

This is a memoir of Ralph Salisbury. The author was born in 1924 to a half Cherokee-Shawnee father and a tough Irish-American mother in rural Iowa. She was tough but still a lady. This book is a glimpse of American history from Mr. Salisbury's eyes. The reader has a chronological view that includes farm life during the Great Depression, His World War II military involvement, and racial and political differences. At first I found the book a little hard to follow. Mr. Salisbury is a great storyteller. He connects his past to his midlife then to his 80-year old present day. He connects his life experiences that are full of history. Sometimes his narrative relays some disturbing images. He describes in detail his part in castration of farm animals., then he goes to the rumors of World War II castration of prisoners. and other castrations. He was a survivor of a lightening strike, explosions, bullets, car and plane mishaps, cancer and other health issues. Salisbury wonders: "Why should anyone read this?" That question is answered not only with its events but in the remarkable story telling of Mr. Salisbury. He takes us from life in rural Iowa, a life of poverty during the Great Depression, then through war and peace. Then the quieter life of a University,.

Memoir alive with poetic touches

The story of Ralph Salisbury's life reads like a good novel, as he reaches toward life's goals, someties not clearly understood by him, but always compelling. The characters in his Irish American-Native American family from Iowa come to life on the pages. From his boyhood in rural Iowa to service in WWII to his literary career and college professorships, Salisbury's writing lured me in.

Tracey Richardson: Going the Distance

This is an easy read book that tells of a Mum's (my friends) battle to cope with the daily struggles of having two neat kids with cystic fibrosis. Her life before kids was not exactly a cake walk but nothing could prepare her for what was in store. The dramas to just get on with life- things we do not even consider for one moment, this lady had to deal with on a sometimes life or death basis. Sheer guts and bloody mindedness saw her morph from sloth to athlete extraordinaire and her battle to complete one of the toughest events on the planet- The Iron Man in Hawaii. If you lack the motivation to get yourself up and moving, this is a must read. For those already there, read this and you will try harder.
Nearly ten years on since its original publish, I will haul the hard copy out of the book case and have a re-read- happy knowing those little kids are now great young adults and Tracey successful in her latest venture

Nach einer kurzen Themeneinführung aus aktuellem Anlass, wurden die Begriffe „externe Personalbeschaffung“ und „Make - or - Buy“ - Entscheidungen definiert, erläutert und in einem Kriterienkatalog miteinander verknüpft. Danach wurden die qualitativen und quantitativen Kriterien untersucht, die bei einer Make - or - Buy - Entscheidung entscheidend sind. Ein wichtiger Aspekt galt dem Kostenvergleich zwischen der Fremdvergabe und der Eigenleistung bei der Personalbeschaffung. Es wurde auf die Methode der Nutzwertanalyse eingegangen, die den Kostenvergleich monetärer und nicht-monetärer Art ermöglicht. Schließlich wurden die jeweiligen Kriterien für die beiden Entscheidungen bewertet und dazu kritisch Stellung genommen.
