A pleasant surprise

[Reviewer’s note] I read the German translation of this novel because I like to keep my reading skills up to date in that language. The skill level required is intermediate in my opinion.

When I saw the movie previews for this book a few months back I was somewhat skeptical. My first thought was that it was just a more rugged version of "Eat Pray Love", and left it at that. Last month I was invited to read Strayed’s novel by a book club I occasionally attend so I figured with the time off I’d have during holidays that I might as well give it a shot.

I’m happy that I did. Although the first pages of the book seemed to confirm my initial suspicion that we were dealing here with a callow 20-something seeking a geographical cure from sex/drug addiction and a recent break-up, later chapters provide more insight into the abuse (alcoholic father) and neglect (flakey mother) Strayed experienced in her childhood. These traumatic memories are interwoven with her experiences on the trail, and they rival every bit the blisters and extreme weather she endures over the course of her 1,000 mile pilgrimage in search of emotional healing.

Strayed’s descriptions of the PCT and its surrounding landscapes are quite detailed and somewhat reminiscent of Heinrich Harrer’s “Seven Years in Tibet”. As an American from the northeast, I have little experience with rugged terrain outside of the occasional day trips I’ve made over the years to the mountains in New Hampshire. Strayed brings to life the national treasure we Americans have out west - vast swaths of land still largely unsullied and only sparsely inhabited. I wouldn’t be surprised if the PCT region sees an influx of hikers in the coming years on account of the book and its film adaptation.

Overall a very good read from a talented writer.

First-rate history, scholarly and humane

I admit I came to this book with an interest in the specific geographical area (northern Maryland), and specifically in slavery there, which is part of what Max Grivno writes about here. But I didn't expect this book to be a revelation on every page--which it was. It's a magnificent, nuanced, tour de force of a history book. Grivno has mined the archives to find not only statistics but also the dozens of personal stories that make every chapter full of human drama. He tells the stories of both black and white laborers and employers in nineteenth-century rural Maryland--slave and free, male and female--and the personal and economic pressures they faced living just south of the Mason-Dixon Line. It's given me a whole new way of thinking about slavery, and about the history of this region. I'm so glad I read it. Absolutely invaluable.

Inspirational series of books

I have reviewed another title by the same author before. Just as it was with the last one, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed that poetry style of "God Speaks for His Bride via The Cloud of Conquest." In my own opinion, it just provides such an easy to read platform compared to the block style of writing. It is easy to follow and you won't lose your spot.

What can I say about this book? Well as you can see by the title, it is exceedingly spiritual. It is not for someone who isn't comfortable with their own spirituality and would thus be offended by the beliefs outlined herein. The message it contains however, is inspirational and wise, yet some might feel overwhelmed by the motivation it gives especially if one isn't used to reading spiritual books such as these. It makes for very deep readings.

It took me a couple days to finish reading it, and I read for hours and hours on a single day, and just as it was with the last book I read by the same author, it would be better for the reader to split it up into daily readings rather than just one or a few sittings.

I admit, there are a few words that I had to google because I didn't know what they meant lol. But once you know the basic meaning it eventually makes sense.

Overall I consider this book a success, and is a must read for anyone who feels as strongly about their spirituality as the author does.

Need Improvements

I worked on the past with Arena and since 2005, I did not have more contact with this simulator, for this reason I took the decision to buy a book, just to refresh my knowledge.
I would like to give 5 stars for this one, but even thinking about 3 stars, you have to be very generous.
The content on the index gives the impression that the book will cover the main subjects. But when you start to do the examples, you have to decipher some steps that are not clear.
I spent so much time just looking for the right information, mainly because the final reports do not match with the book examples.
The exercises available do not have answers, so you will never know if you are on the right direction.
I am very disappointed with this book, I took the decision to buy another one (Simulation with Arena by W. Kelton, R. Sadowski and N. Swets)
