About the Author

Rex Kusler was born in Missouri and raised in a small Iowa town. After calling Silicon Valley home for thirty years, Kusler relocated to Las Vegas to indulge his love of the desert and his fascination with gambling and probability. A mechanical designer by profession, Kusler began his writing career in the early 1980s selling short stories to regional magazines before trying his hand at novels. He is the author of Angela, Family, and the Las Vegas Mystery series.

Backstory to popular Las Vegas Mystery series

Please note that it says in Big Letters in the description that this is a SERIES with more episodes available for download at a later time; it is not a complete book in one download. It's like watching your favorite tv series, stay tuned for more.

If you are a fan of Rex Kusler's Las Vegas Mysteries--PUNCTURED, ASHES TO DUST, and DESERT DROP--you will be familiar with Jim Snow, one of the main characters. We got bits and pieces of his past, enough to make us love him warts and all, because he admits to making mistakes: he did some dumb things, he was a jerk... But what makes him a good character in those stories is that we see his light bulb come on, he realizes consequences, and grows up a little bit. SNOW ADRIFT is Jim Snow BEFORE Las Vegas Mysteries, back when he wasn't so self-aware (granted, he's not perfect but that's why the stories are so good!) So now we get a peek into how he gets to the slightly warmer-fuzzier Jim, and maybe it won't be so pretty at times, but I'm soaking it all in because I know the character will just get better, even more "real". We meet his early days poker friends--more good characters and dialog--and then one of them gets shot. Jim and his friends start working the case in the background because that's what friends do and as a former detective, why the heck not? That is the gist of the first part in the series, and I am anxiously awaiting more. Stay tuned for more Klassic Kusler...

A Step Back in Time

Good book. Another story in the Las Vegas Mystery series, but it's set prior to previous novels in the series.

Jim Snow is a former police detective who quit the force to become a professional poker player. After two-and-a-half years of playing success, he is on a three-month losing streak. He also has a weekly poker game with four other men, one of whom is killed after leaving one Friday night. The primary suspect appears to be Jim Snow due to his reluctance to take a polygraph.

Kusler writes Jim Snow three years younger quite successfully. Snow is Snow, only with much sharper edges. In fact, the whole story seems written three years earlier. The style seems to be three years earlier in Kusler's writing. Everything is rougher than the previous installments.

This is a pretty decent whodunnit. I figured out the who pretty early on, but the why eluded me. One day, maybe, if I work real hard, I can figure out the why of stories. Highly recommended.

A witty and brilliant play

After seeing this play in London in the Spring of 2010, my deepest regret was not buying the script. I was delighted to see that I could buy it on Amazon. "Really Old, Like FortyFive" is a brilliant play that discusses public healthcare in conjunction with our societal fear of growing old. While funny, it is also chillingly poignant as it looks our embarrassment and fear to age in the face.

About the Author
G. I. Gurdjieff (1866–1949) created an original system of self-transformation that reconciled the great mystical traditions, known as the "Fourth Way" or "the Work." He initially gathered pupils in Moscow and in 1915 organized a study group in St. Petersburg that included P. D. Ouspensky, a leading figure in the spread of the teachings. Amid revolutionary turmoil in Russia, in 1917 he moved to the Caucasus and in 1922 established an institute for his work in France. The sources of the present book stem from this early period.

Disappointing and Disingenuous

Having long been interested in Gurdjieff's Fourth Way teachings, I was excited to see a new book by Gurdjieff had been published and I purchased the book. Much to my surprise and disappointment, while the cover claims G. I. Gurdjieff as the author, it is actually written by Stephen A. Grant, a member of the Gurdjieff Foundation. In his foreword, within all the verbiage, Grant admits the book "restates" portions of two seminal books, In Search of the Miraculous and Views of the Real World, from a new translation, and is a "reconstruction" of Gurdjieff's early teachings, and that it was "arranged and edited with a small group of followers of Gurdjieff and Madame de Saltzman."

Dubious, I nevertheless read the book, hoping that this "new arrangement" would provide some insights or clarifications of what are extremely deep and challenging concepts. I was sorely disappointed. Rather than clarifying key components of the teaching, this "new translation" muddles the concepts and makes them even more difficult to comprehend. It also takes the vibrancy and life from Gurdjieff's own words! (One's words don't mean anything!) On rare occasions I did find passages that were elucidating, as in the chapters on the law of octaves and degrees of materiality. Otherwise, the reorganization and the paraphrasing of Gurdjieff's analogies dilute the teaching. The sixteen chapters in Part VII through Part IX, the "how-to" portion of the book, are actually a disservice to those who are new to the Fourth Way. And the idea that Gurdjieff and Ouspensky didn't actually break up but decided to divide the teaching, Gurdjieff with the esoteric, Ouspensky with the exoteric?! Oh yes, that is why Ouspensky came to America in the 1940s, he said if Gurdjieff came he would leave. And, yes, why didn't Ouspensky agree to meet when he returned in 1947 and Gurdjieff asked to meet? To top it off - not once does the book indicate the source of the paraphrasing. This means one is unable to check the text against the original source! Kinda slinky, huh? There is something fundamentally wrong here. How would you like it if some "learned being" took all your letters or writings and "reconstructed" them, and then published them under your own name and gave no references to the originals?

Please do not buy this book

I have studied G's work for four decades. This is not a Gurdjieff book. It is a bad paraphrase of previously published work. It has been compiled by someone who has only external understanding of the work. In fact there are times when the language used by this "author" actually distorts G's intentions.

This has not been done in previous works. Sure it is nice to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of G's public work. But this is not the way to do it. This is Wiseacering at its worst.

If you want to come to a beginners understanding of the Work then read O's In Search of the Miraculous. Or Colin or Bennett or other authors who have given their life over to The Work. And of course obtain All and Everything. This is a master work which G prepared and left for us.

Why?

Why would Stephen Grant, or anyone else, take a perfectly good and time tested book and rewrite it? Grant as in law kin of Gurdjieff seemed to think it was a good thing to take Ouspensky's book In Search of the Miraculous and retitle and rewrite it. I find that crude and distastefull. I would neither buy the book nor recommend it.

About the Author
Richard Zeitlin earned a Masters and a Ph.D. in U.S. History at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He worked for the Wisconsin Historical Society, operated a historical consulting corporation, and became the director of the Wisconsin Veterans Museum. As the director of the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, Zeitlin presided over the redevelopment of a new facility and a major expansion in the museum's programs.

Eagle makes good in war effort

A rather interesting story of a civil war mascot. Abe was captured as an eaglet in 1860 and donated to the company that was forming near there. It is most telling of the effort from the point of view of the basic infantry that fought the war. At times you understand the confusion surrounding any battle and other times you feel proud that folks just like you and me could acquit themselves so well in face of horrendous circumstances. You do not see the blood and guts but you know that it was there and awful.

The bird may as well have been any other animal, but for some reason, the aura of the bird and, maybe, the name, created a situation that made Old Abe into a symbol of the war effort. This continued for the rest of its life and on into its afterlife as a stuffed bird.

Grade 6 Up?To most modern kids, classics may be great, worthy, even exciting stories, but they were written in and for their own times and the context can sometimes be obscure. Using the visually irresistible printing techniques popularized by the "Eyewitness" series, these two books, when prominently displayed, will probably attract more impulse readers than some of the dustier editions. But do they accomplish their stated aim? Direct textual illustration is plentiful, lively, and useful. The reproductions of prints, photographs, and maps that pepper each page and are intended to enhance readers' grasp of the times, however, are a mixed success. There is a sameness to them and an arbitrary feel to their use. Pirate buffs will find Treasure Island's variety of ship drawings, details of sailing minutiae, and photographs of pieces of eight or guns and swords quite satisfying. Verne's work is less enhanced by its graphics. This episodic travelogue would be best served by lots of clear maps with the route well marked. But the few maps shown are so small that the legends are unreadable and country and city names are blurred. The explanatory captions (credited to Jean-Pierre Verdet only on the copyright page) accompanying the latter are largely superfluous, although they do add random snippets of historical background to the journey. It's the views of old ships and trains, of costumed natives, and distant ports of call--from Port Said to San Francisco--that evoke the tale's panorama of the exotic, just as the many lurid Verne trading cards and other spinoffs capture the plot's melodramatic highlights. steam powered excellence

I can't believe that a 130+ year old book translated to English was good enough to keep me up half the night but this brilliant old gem did. The story features the height of late 1800 steam technology and a couple of heros who want to circumnavigate the earth in 80 days to win a bet. The characters are surprisingly likable and the action is just GREAT. Put this at the top of the queue for great free reads and you will get a wonderful easy read and a brilliant view of the world.

Very Good Even If No Balloon Rides

The story is about an eccentric Englishman named Phileas Fogg who makes a twenty thousand pound bet with five of his rich country club friends to travel around the world in eighty days with his trusty servant Passepartout a Frenchman. Along the way they have to overcome many obstacles. Fogg spends most of his fortune overcoming these obstacles and if they don't win the bet he will be ruined. There are some things however that even money can't overcome and several times Fogg is faced with a moral decision that if he pursues the right thing to do will significantly set him back on time.
Their travels take them through England, Paris, the Suez Canal, Egypt, India, Hong Kong, Japan, America, and Ireland. In India they rescue a princess who stays on with them throughout the rest of their journey and a love interest grows between her and Fogg. There is also another subplot involving a bank robbery in England where 55 thousand pounds have been stolen, and Fogg is considered to be the main suspect. A detective Fix is assigned to follow Fogg and to arrest him once he sets foot on English territory.
This book seems to be split into two parts. During the first part of the book when things are going smoothly the servant Passepartout seems to be the main character. At each port Fogg stays in his cabin and just focuses on the next leg of the trip while Passepartout ventures out and gives you a description of the land. It would seem a shame to travel all around the world and not pause to take in any of the sights as Fogg does. I found most of these early chapters pretty mundane and uneventful.
The subplot with Fix at times becomes annoying, and it isn't until they are all working towards the same goal, that this line of the story improves. I also found the exchange rate between dollars and pounds confusing at times. The pound must have been about four or five times greater than the dollar at the time this story was written. Fogg leaves England with around twenty thousand pounds and spends it seems over a hundred thousand dollars on the trip.
Later on as the story progresses and things start to go wrong the focus changes over to Fogg. Passepartout still does some heroic things, but Fogg takes charge and shows some redeeming qualities. The pace of the story quickens and becomes more enjoyable with a few skirmishes taking place in India and America. Fogg seems a different person upon returning to England, and his life is changed forever.
My wife has a framed poster that hangs on one of our walls with a collage of all of the movies that have won the best picture of the year award. "Around The World In Eighty Days" won the award in 1956, and the picture is represented in the collage with the main character Phileas Fogg and his trusty servant Passepartout taking a balloon flight. Based on this picture for years I always assumed the book was about a trip in a balloon around the world. I was surprised then to find out once I finally got a chance to read the actual book that they travel by boat, train, car, sled, and even elephant, but that they never travel by balloon. It turns out that the most memorable scene from the movie was made up by the director and added on to the story. The director seemed to have come to same conclusion that I did, that the written story itself was very good, but I was expecting something a little more.
The book was written in 1873. Jules Verne the author is a Frenchman. In this day and age it was pleasing to see both England and America looked upon in such a favorable light. Englishmen were portrayed as noble and Americans were portrayed as wild and adventurous.

I think this book is a superior book because it is full of action. This book is about a man named Mr. Phileas Fogg, and his faithful servant, Passepartout, that wager a bet that They can travel the whole world in eighty days stopping at Suez via Mont Cenis and Brindisi, then to Bombay, then Calcutta, Hong Kong, Japan (Yokohama), San Francisco, New York, back to London, all within eighty days, and by steamboats, and trains. However, a nosy detective, Detective Fix, tracks them down, and tries to arrest Mr. Fogg because he believes that Fogg stole fifty-five thousand pounds. As one may guess, this greatly detains Mr. Fogg, and it seems like he may not make the trip around the world after all. However, the Fix never seems to catch up with Fogg, and Fogg triumphs over most of the obstacles that come his way, like missing boats, missing trains, missing people, and Fogg even meets and rescues a beautiful Indian Princess called Aouda. However, Fix finally catches up to the detective, and everything seems lost for Fogg until Fix discovers that Fogg was not the robber, and Fogg is released. Even so, Fogg is one day late, and in doing so, misses the train that would have taken him to London precisely to win the bet. He ordered a special train, but even in doing so, still misses the bet...or so he thinks. The ending of the book is a very unexpected one. Read this book and find out!

"The St. Johns," writes naturalist Bill Belleville, "is surely one long and meandering palimpsest," a place that has been remade many times over as humans have sought to grow crops, raise livestock, and otherwise make the river bend to their will. With 3.5 million people now living in its broad valley, the St. Johns is coming under increased pressure to change, its dense forests cleared for shopping malls and housing developments.

The river harbors many secrets, and Belleville is only too happy to share them as he makes a case for why the river should be allowed to follow its own path. It is a place, he writes, of giant snails and nesting herons, a place of wild storms and suffocatingly hot days. And more: it is a place of rare qualities, one that deserves to be protected. The St. Johns River flows for 310 miles from its headwaters near Lake Okeechobee northward through Jacksonville to the Atlantic. John James Audubon and Winslow Homer painted the river; Friedrich Delius was inspired by it to compose Florida Suite. John and William Bartram, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Sidney Lanier, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, and James Branch Cabell described its scenery and wildlife. Belleville, an environmental writer and filmmaker, ambitiously becomes the St. Johns's latest chronicler. His narrative of a journey through its waters, though perhaps less lyrical than his predecessors', is knowledgeable and compelling. Although much of the river's beauty endures, farm runoff, industrial pollution, and overdevelopment threaten its unique ecology. Although he does not neglect the historical and cultural richness that led to the river's 1998 designation as an "American Heritage River," Belleville emphasizes the need for careful stewardship of its unique biological diversity. What an adventure it must be to pack up a kayak, rent a boat, pick up scuba equipment, and journey down one of America's great rivers. St. Johns River is Florida's longest, and as with most U.S. rivers, commerce seems to be one of its main focuses, leaving culture, ecology, and the sheer beauty of the body of water behind. Belleville attempts to remedy that here, and his book is, by turns, filled with beautiful prose (characterizing the river as evidence that God has some Jackson Pollack in him), and details that will appeal only to the most ardent naturalist (concerning, for instance, the apple snail and its brethren). Generally, however, his Mark Twain^-like excursion downriver is a laid-back, kick-your-shoes-off lollygag that includes shooting some rapids in a kayak, exploring ornate underground caves in diving equipment, and communicating with fishermen, scientists, and river historians about the significance of a major U.S. waterway. A Florida Vacation, Minus The Mouse

This is one of those vacation-like books that I hoped wouldn't end. From the peaceful beginnings of the St. Johns to its rollicking arrival at the Atlantic Ocean, each page delivered a new marvel. Belleville followed his nose deep into the river-weeds, down into underwater caves, and out to the center of beautiful, bird-ful lakes. And he didn't shy away from observing that damnable human yearning to live as close as possible to the water's edge. All the world is wrapped up in this river: I found reason to marvel, reason to rail, and reason to hope for the future.

This is a terrific book. If you live along the St. Johns you want to read it. It's loaded with information about the human history, natural history, and current condition of the river. It is an engaging read only occasionally mared by bad writing. If you can get past the swamp of the first paragraph the rest is good, with only a few overpriced three dollar words sprinked through the text.

I quite by chance received this book. What a wonderful surprise. I have lived near the St. Johns river all my life but only now after reading the history and the description in Belleville's book, have I begun to understand the splendor of this river. His narrative is full of wonderful and glorious words that aptly describe my feelings when on the St. Johns, and the tributaries. I have been on the Econ, Ocklawaha, Wekiva and felt exactly his same feelings but unable to put it to words, A great read!!

Classics for Today

Reading this book by Matt and Jeremy reminds us that the classic spiritual disciplines are relevant for today, but more importantly are not "duties to perform" but ways in which God draws us closer to himself. Too often in Christianity people are taught these disciplines are for the purpose of moving you closer to God, while Matt and Jeremy remind us the opposite is in fact the reality of the disciplines.

About the Author
Oscar Wilde (1854 1900) was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. Wilde studied at Trinity College in Dublin and at Magdalen College in Oxford, England, before settling down in London and having a long, successful career as a poet, playwright, and author. Wilde is best known for his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and for his satirical play The Importance of Being Earnest.

It was easy to read it.
The story is enough interesting to encourage me to read it.
Y finished in one week.
The activities were not very useful for me.
