Toni Morrison: Paradise, Love, A Mercy (Bloomsbury Studies in Contemporary North American Fiction), by Lucille P. Fultz

Toni Morrison features a collection of ten new essays by noted Morrison scholars, including recipients of the Toni Morrison Society Book Award. Focusing upon Morrison's most recently published novels (Paradise, Love, A Mercy) the contributors to this volume revisit issues that continue to engage Morrison and are part of the currency of contemporary American literary and cultural history. These selections examine Morrison's ongoing "romance" with African Americans as they continue to battle the demons of race, gender, class, and poverty, to name a few. Together, these essays offer comprehensive and nuanced discussions of Morrison's latest novels and provide new directions for Morrison scholarship in the 21st century.

This volume provides students of literature, cultural studies, and history with an overview of Morrison's examination of African American progress and leadership at key moments in American history and culture from the Colonial Period to the present. Through their thematic interconnectedness, the essays reveal Morrison at her most brilliant in her ability to reach into the past to comment on contemporary issues.

Living Life Fully: Finding Sanity and Goodness in the Unpredictable, by Bill Karelis

We are all imprisoned by the projections of our minds, and we all have the power to free ourselves. To gain this freedom, we must do three things: know that we are imprisoned, investigate how we entrap ourselves, and discover how to overcome our habitual patterns. The discipline of the sitting practice of meditation can lead us through such a process.

Meditation doesn’t have to be heavy or ambitious. We don’t have to cultivate the self-image of being "spiritual" people. Rather, by forming a simple, direct, and honest relationship with ourselves and our world, we discover a rich and full path, no matter what our life situation. Cultivating decency and gentleness is always possible. And doing so makes a genuine life.

Freeing ourselves from our self-imposed prisons
By Andrew Safer
Finding ourselves imprisoned within the four walls of our minds, and then making the journey beyond these self-imposed limitations is what Bill Karelis' book, Living Life Fully: Finding Sanity and Goodness in the Unpredictable, is all about. This metaphor comes from his 40 years' experience as a practitioner of Buddhist meditation and 36 years as a meditation teacher, combined with his efforts to introduce meditation practice to prisoners in the criminal justice system over 16 years. "We learn how we can uplift ourselves," Karelis writes, "to change our affiliation from neurotic, self-destructive behavior to sanity, gentleness, and goodness." Karelis' message echoes that of his root teacher, Chogyam Trungpa, the renowned Tibetan Buddhist meditation master and innovator who also brought the Shambhala teachings to the West.

For anyone who is on this journey--either at the point of first realizing one's entrapment, or at any point in the discovery of freedom--Living Life Fully would serve as a useful travelogue. Just how the practice of meditation serves as an indispensible tool in this journey is well articulated. Reading this book is like having a knowledgeable guide close at hand. Karelis outlines the meditation technique in the Appendix, and throughout the book explains how this 2500-year old practice facilitates the process of "finding sanity and goodness in the unpredictable". This includes disengaging from the storylines in our heads, the softening process that comes from experiencing feelings in their own right, and the development of confidence in one's fundamental intelligence and goodness. His emphasis on unpredictability highlights the elusive nature of reality, beyond one's control.

A key element of the mindfulness and awareness meditation practice that Karelis describes is letting go. "It could mean that we don't have to hold on to who we think we are," he writes, "or hold on to our feelings as identify, or hold on to whatever fixation arises in our mind, merely out of habitual grasping." Further, he graphically explains: "We can experience our spasm and live through it without validating our progress or attempting to resolve anything." Shining a spotlight on the mechanics of the meditation technique, he likens noticing a thought to holding a grain of rice between the chopsticks of attentiveness, and then returning to the out-breath. Whereas the mindfulness practice develops precision, he writes, "Insight (or we could say awareness) acts as a further, more profound and vast bridge to the world. It provides a reflection, mirroring the situation, telling us which way to go. If we are about to have a neurotic upheaval, awareness comes to us as a kind of warning signal. It is light but definite. Mindfulness practice quiets the mind to the point where such messages can be distinctly heard."

While books on spirituality often state or imply that following the prescribed path will result in the achievement of happiness / bliss / peace, Karelis eschews this approach. "If we regard meditation purely as a novelty or a form of spiritual self-reinforcement, whereby we get high on abnegation, for instance," he writes, "then it cannot cut to the core of ego." Rather than pursuing one's agenda--however lofty--he stresses the importance of working with whatever presents itself, with curiosity and a sense of appreciation. With this orientation, one begins to Live Life Fully. Thus, Karelis steers clear of the love-and-light goal-oriented approach that Trungpa dubbed `spiritual materialism'.

In his description of the six realms of existence--the psychological states of mind that humans cycle through, according to Buddhist understanding--Karelis highlights the dissatisfaction that marks the human realm (hearkening back to the Rolling Stones' `I can't get no satisfaction'). He states that one's inability to deal with dissatisfaction is at the root of addictions. Referring to the god realm, he writes: "The gods have it made...because their existence is rife with pleasure and satisfaction; they sit like a cherry on top of the sundae of existence." This reader, who has read more than a few Buddhist books, finds Karelis' descriptions refreshing.

For everyone who wants to live an artful life
By Barbara Trenchard
Bill Karelis has written an excellent introduction to the practice of meditation in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. While there are many books one could turn to for just this sort of overview, Mr. Karelis's book is exceptional in the clarity, depth and precision of his prose. As he writes in the introduction, "this book is for people who to some degree feel at odds with themselves and their surroundings and realize that this has happened." And who is not this true of, at least for some period? Written as only it can be by one who has made the journey personally, his words gently lay bare our everyday predicament and experience and guide us to a path for a richer, fresher, and more uplifted life.

A terrific book
By Cheryl Sacamano
Bill Karelis has written an eloquent, heartfelt and practical book that brings the wisdom of 2500 years of Buddhist study and practice into the often-difficult issues of modern life. This book is unique in the ease and clarity with which it matches ancient, extremely profound teachings to the nitty-gritty of our language and experience. While we now have in the West many texts of great, highly recognized masters in translation and composed in English, there is a place for those born and raised in our modern, fragmented world to share their vital knowledge of the Buddhist path. This is an excellent rendition of such knowledge, and it will be a great help to many.

Friendships grow in the most unlikely of places. Mrs Reynolds is a little old lady. Jay is a troubled youth. When he vandalises her lovingly tended garden, the authorities send him back to help her fix it. It seems a recipe for disaster - but human beings are more complex than the headlines.

At first glance this is a simple tale of two generations locked in battle, Mrs Reynolds standing up for traditional values with her "nice little house, nice little garden and nice little life" vs. Jay, the textbook chain-smoking hoodie prowling the urban jungle demanding respect but offering little in return. But there is more to these characters than the other suspects. Just as they think they have the measure of each other, something is revealed and they are shocked by what they find out.

Mrs Reynolds and the Ruffian explores human nature and friendship alongside the social climate of modern Britain giving a warm, funny and wise glimpse into the way we live now.

Capital Punishment: An Indictment

Billy Wayne Sinclair was only 21 when he heard the Louisiana judge pronounce these words: "I hereby sentence you to death in the electric chair." It was the culmination of a botched holdup committed the year before in which Billy had accidentally shot and killed a man. Billy spent the next 40 years in Angola Prison - one of the country's worst - six of those years on death row. When in 1972 the Supreme Court struck down the death penalty as arbitrary and capricious, Billy was re-sentenced to life without parole. Finally released in 2006, he now examines the death penalty in great detail, from ancient history - an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth - to the present. Informed by his own experience and his decades-long studies, this book offers important information about, and insights into, a subject that is as heated and controversial today as it ever was.

We Need a Stronger Argument Against the Death Penalty
By Caleb D. Powell
In this book Billy Wayne Sinclair and his wife write an eloquent plea, very well-researched, perhaps too much, to state their claim. I, too, feel the death penalty should be abolished, but the Sinclairs hinder as much as help this cause. My views: The best punishment for the most dangerous felon is life in prison. The criminal justice system must give priority to, in order, society, victims, and then the criminal. Rehabilitation only makes sense for the criminal who will return to society, and should not be a factor for lifers.

The background of this story is Billy Wayne Sinclair's crime. In the commission of a robbery he shot a convenience store clerk. Though Sister Helen Prejean and Billy say the killing was unintentional, common sense looks at the facts: he held up a store, ran, fired at and killed his pursuer. Accidental killing? That's a stretch, Billy fired a gun in the direction of his victim. While committing a felony he killed someone. He was guilty. Sinclair and Prejean try to mitigate murder.

The meat of the book makes compelling universal arguments against the death penalty: revenge, brutality, the chance of the executed being innocent, and so forth, but explores little new territory and extols the weaker sides of the anti-death penalty movement. One such side is a judgment against victims and society for desiring vengeance. For example, John Ledbetter Gray, executed because he raped and killed a child. The author quotes the child's father and writes:

" `Even in prison he had been able to talk, to breathe, and to laugh, and he had taken all these things from my little girl,' Scales (the father) said, continuing to stoke the flames of revenge. `He didn't have the right to continue to live.'"

Mr. Scales lost his daughter in the most horrific manner, yet Sinclair judges Mr. Scales with almost greater condemnation than the murderer. What's worse, Gray was out on parole after murdering a 16 year-old girl in Arizona. The Sinclairs failed to research, or purposely omit this fact, as they judge the father as `stoking the flames of revenge.'

The Sinclairs also lose credibility concerning John Spenkelink, the first person executed after Gary Gilmore. Sinclair writes that Spenkelink claimed self-defense after being raped at gunpoint by a man. But the Sinclairs do not investigate the claim, or did and chose not to write that the evidence proved that Spenkelink had been sexually assaulted after being threatened with a gun, but left, returned with his own gun, and shot the man in the back. Self-defense, indeed. Why do the Sinclairs only show one side?

Later the Sinclairs defend child rapists as having committed a lesser crime than murderers, with no mention of the high rate of recidivism, and a pattern of one crime leading to a more horrific crime in such felons. In the next chapter the Sinclairs focus on victims. Billy expresses remorse for the man he killed, and tries to shows the victim's father side. Yet, once again, Billy Wayne Sinclair comes across as judgmental toward the victim for wanting revenge. Billy Wayne Sinclair is passionate about how evil revenge is in society, but is relatively silent about the evil of rape and crime. Sure, it is in Billy's interest, but what about society? What about law abiding citizens. What is in our interest?

Then Billy criticizes life in prison. Life in prison is the only punishment superior to the death penalty for the worst offenders. But Billy calls this slow torture and death, and that prisoners should have hope for parole. What? Try telling that to Mr. Scales, whose daughter was killed by a man on parole.

Yes, Billy Wayne Sinclair seems to be successfully rehabilitated, remorseful (although it is always in the criminals best interest to show remorse), and is now a productive member of society. He is an exception. Recidivism is far too high, and until the recidivism rate hits zero, only then would I want to hear about why felons should be released back into society.

The Sinclairs demonstrate, once again, that anti-death penalty advocates care too much about the criminal, and care too little about victims and society. Just once I'd like to read a book by a convicted murderer that focuses on the victims. At the very least the Sinclairs should center their attention on abusive and dysfunctional families.

All I can say, Billy Wayne Sinclair, is that you still don't get it. You don't get what it's like to lose a loved one, even after all those years of meditation, and all your will. You still don't understand. You have not eased the pain of one victim. Straight up, Billy, you dont get this: That Mr. Scales, or the father of the man you killed, would rather have been in prison and have their children alive and safe, than have lived free and have seen them murdered.

Mixed emotions
By Jonathan Sabin
I guess I'm what you could call a "law-and-order liberal." All things being equal, I would just as soon the death penalty be abolished in this country, but I don't lose any sleep when people the likes of Ted Bundy are executed.

And that's how I felt when I cracked open this rather interesting book by Billy Wayne Sinclair, a guy who spent years on death row for a murder he acknowledges he committed, but who is now a productive citizen.

Sinclair's take on the death penalty is that it has no place in this country as it does not leave open the possibility for rehabilitation, parole --or hope.

So how do I feel after having read his book? Exactly the same. In fact, I found some of Sinclair's words and thoughts to be a little bit disturbing. He talks about a murder in which the bullet just "nicked" the victim's aorta. Perhaps it did, but I gather that the purpose of wording it like that is to somehow diminish the seriousness of the crime. "Nicked the aorta" sure sounds a lot less awful than "shot in the heart." But if it was YOUR loved one who had their aorta "nicked," I really doubt that that's how you would be referring to the wound.

He also writes of murderers (such as himself) who end up being released --as if that's a good thing. Certainly, Sinclair himself may no longer be a threat to society, but in all honesty --I don't really care. The murderer's victims didn't get a 'second chance' and neither should they.

Someone who has committed a crime worthy of receiving a LIFE sentence deserves to spend the rest of their lives behind bars. He maintains that a "true" life term eliminates hope. Well? So? Good.

What I STRONGLY agree with the author about is the issue of the falsely accused and convicted. In fact, to me, that's the single BIGGEST problem I have with the death penalty. There is something HORRIBLY wrong when someone is wrongly accused and meets his (or her) fate in the electric chair (or at the end of a needle). You cannot simply go "oops, my bad" when the evidence reveals someone's innocence AFTER they're dead.

Sinclair also talks about prosecutors and courts that refuse to hear evidence that will prove someone's innocence following a conviction. I stand with the author in agreement that not only are cases like this a travesty of justice, but the attorneys and judges who would hide such evidence should be thrown in jail.

I've given this book a three-star rating. I thought it was fairly well-written, and pretty interesting. I just had to shave off a couple of stars for the parts that ticked me off!

Disappointed with this book
By Gajopa
I read the Sinclair's other book when it first came out and considered it in the top 5 I've ever read, and I'm an avid reader. I've wished they would write an update to their lives since then so when I saw this one I ordered it immediately hoping that it was. Instead it's filled with statistics of the death penality, along with their opinion of it. While well written it's just not terribly interesting. If I hadn't been so eager I could have bought it for $2.20 new shortly afterwards so that tells me it's not a best seller by any means.

I felt then and now that Billy was not treated fairly in the length of time he had to serve. There's nothing fair about the penalty phase of our justice system. One person will be given 15 years after deliberating killing a person and sometimes several people and another will get the death sentence. Since his intent was not to kill, I think 40 years was too long to serve in view of others intentionally killing and getting out in a few years. I think it's admirable that he chose to make something of his life while he served his sentence. I don't understand their reasoning that the death sentence should be abolished. Why should a deliberate murderer be allowed to live after heinous crimes, people like BTK and many others? A person should have consequences that fit their crime. So, Billy and Jodie if you read this I would still like to read about your lives from then until now.

A level 4 Oxford Bookworms Library graded reader. Retold for Learners of English by John Escott

When Black Beauty is trained to carry a rider on his back, or to pull a carriage behind him, he finds it hard at first. But he is lucky - his first home is a good one, where his owners are kind people, who would never be cruel to a horse.

But in the nineteenth century many people were cruel to their horses, whipping them and beating them, and using them like machines until they dropped dead. Black Beauty soon finds this out, and as he describes his life, he has many terrible stories to tell.

Eyesores (Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction), by Eric Shade

These eleven interrelated stories follow strands of hope and nostalgia that bind together, or fence off, the people of Windfall. Eric Shade's fictional western Pennsylvania community is a place we all know: a town bypassed by the interstate, its rail line clogged with coal cars that haven't moved an inch in years. The men of Windfall still vie on the time-honored fields of contest--from bars to bedrooms to football fields--but none is sure any longer what is won or lost. Few certainties linger: the jobs are going fast and the best women are already taken.

In the title story, a group of unskilled laborers rerun memories of youth as they race against the dark to demolish the town's drive-in theater. A chain restaurant will take its place. Naomi dumps Dwight at the altar in "Hoops, Wires, and Plugs," but then Dwight fritters away the shamed agitation that could have propelled him beyond Windfall's stunting gravitational pull. In the final story, "Souvenirs," small-time hoods Paxson and Gus do what so many in Windfall can't: get out of town. They're off to Pittsburgh and a contract killing they hope will kick off a more rewarding life of crime.

In hands less able than Eric Shade's, Windfall's men would be caricatures, screw-ups with all-too-easy access to the makings of tragedy: pills, booze, fast cars, guns, chain saws. Instead their stories give us new ways to ponder change and its consequences. Windfall stakes out a gritty quarter of the literary map shared by Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg and Thornton Wilder's Grover's Corners.

great collection of stories
By Jesse
I'm a huge fan of short fiction and I came upon this collection while cruising around, reading other reviews. I've never written a review on Amazon before, but "Eyesores" was such an enjoyable read that I felt like it was an injustice that no reviews had been posted on it.

Shade's collection is solid from start to finish--there are no duds here. Anyone who is interested in small-town dreamers, drifters, and those who have regrets about their decisions in life, will definitely enjoy these stories. Each of them speak to an element of nostalgia, and this nostalgia usually stems from each character's failure to actualize his dreams. The fictional town of Windfall, PA, is the locale for all of the stories--and this provincial setting factors heavily into the overall melancholia of the book.

Shade's writing is short, succinct, and his imagery is so simple and beautiful, that I wished I had taken more time to read the book. My only regret is that now I can never read it again for the first time. Highly recommended.

Truly Memorable
By Robert S. Warner
I picked this up at the local library a couple of years ago. It's such a complete work of art, it just blew me away for a couple of days. I saw it for sale at the same library for a dollar, a clearing out sale. I would have given them 50 dollars for it, no kidding. I gave that copy to someone I thought might like it, and here I am ordering a couple of more. I have only read this collection once, and the images and motivations of the characters have stayed with me for years. It's episodic but complete, like Winesburg,OH or really good t.v. Truly, do yourself this favor.

Rocks of southern Africa

Very well done and informative volume. Valuable for anyone buying, collecting or working with rocks. So many vendors are clueless about their wares that this volume can add the provenance for many originally labeled as from "Africa".

South African rocks
By Hyo
I really looked forward to using this book when I was in Southern Africa. I didn't have a chance to use it in the field, however, as the geology-based trip I wanted to go on didn't have enough people. However, I really enjoyed going through the book; very good descriptions and nice color photos. Not in-depth, but as it says on the cover, it's a "field guide"

Close, but no Archy McNally
By Movie Maven
I was initially exhilarated to read that there would be a last novel forthcoming from one of my favorite authors, Lawrence Sanders, and his terrific and entertaining "Discreet Inquiries" sleuth, Archy. The book is actually authored by Vincent Lardo.
This book is a tremendous disappointment. After reading it, I would rather the Archy McNally series was left alone as Lawrence Sanders' legacy to millions of spellbound, laughing readers.
I'm sure that Vincent Lardo found the offer to continue Sanders' very lucrative McNally series more than he could resist. At the same time, though, the writing isn't anywhere near the level of Sanders'. Mr. Sanders' obvious love for the nutty characters that populate McNally novels (and his painstaking descriptions of Archy's culinary feasts and sartorial misdeeds,) isn't anywhere to be found. The endearing personality traits of our hero Archy are gone, along with the man who created them.
If you want a fantastic read, pick up any of the McNally series, but don't bother with this one.

Archy's Cake Sans Icing
By Ed
I throughly enjoyed McNally's Dilemma, even if it wasn't written by the great Lawrence Sanders. Maybe it was the fact that I was looking forward to more of Sanders' work since I first read 'The First Deadly Sin', in high school, circa 1973. I do agree that the publisher (G.P Putnam's Sons) should have used Vincent Lardo's name on the cover as one reviewer suggested, with characters created by Lawrence Sanders or similar wording. I did not feel cheated, as I closely read all credits and acknowledgements before I start to read any book anyway. I thought Mr. Lardo captured the free-spirit of Archy beautifully. Like all of the Archy series, it was a fun read. I do hope Putnam publishes more in the series, but give the real author, Vincent Lardo, the credit. Hopefully, there is a final book of Mr. Sanders still waiting to be published! Lawrence Sanders, you will be missed! Buy McNally's Dilemma, it's worth it. Many thanks to Amazon.com, your service is outstanding! Three days after placing my order, McNally's Dilemma was at my doorstep, packaged perfectly, and in mint condition! Hollywood types: cast Ryan Stiles as Archy McNally & Danny Bonaduce as Binky Watrous!

Close. No cigar (or even an English Oval.)
By Irish Lace
Like reviewer Aimeeh, I saw this book prominently displayed inthe bookstore (sorry, Amazon, but as much as I love you, it's a great place to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon.) with the familiar Lawrence Sanders byline above the title. I grabbed it with joy. Got home; settled in and, about 30 pages into it began to have a vague, "What the heck happened to Archy?" feeling. Then I noticed the small print mentioning Mr. Lardo and, I assure you, my dis was most thorougly gruntled. Shame on Penguin Putnam and Berkley Publishing Group, and something called "Lawrence Sanders Enterprises, Inc." for this petty rip off. I am sad to learn Mr. Sanders has gone to that great Pelican Club in the sky.
I persevered with the book, perhaps because Archy would have. It turns out, however, that Archy McNally isn't in this book. This Archy has lost his sparkle, his depth, his wisdom and his self-deprecating silliness. Most of the wonderful world that Sanders created for us in South Florida, on Royal Palm Way, at "the manse", and at the Pelican Club is simply gone. Lardo's world is gray and featureless, his characters without depth or charm ... or even much individuality.
The Pelican Club is reduced to an Applebees. He milked that steak-tartare-medium-rare joke to death, and since when does Mr. Pettibone engage in gossip? I missed the repartee with the beautiful Priscilla. Lolly Spindrift becomes just another dishonest reporter. Al Rogoff is rendered charmless and the tug-of-war between him and Archy is gone. The stunning Consuela had neither her usual glow, or her sharp edges. Binky is a cardboard cutout on crutches. Even the grand senior McNally has become featureless and simply boring. They are all gone. And the plot was dumb. I am 200 pages in and I'll take bets that I know who the "Mystery Woman" is. Sanders would never have allowed that.
I could wax eloquent on the demise of this great character and his friends, but, for the nonce, this will have to suffice.
I'm sad, but I must say goodbye. Goodbye, Archy. Goodbye to that wonderful world along the South Florida beach. Goodbye to the Pelican Club, and the fabulous food, and the many grand and silly and horrible characters Lawrence Sanders created for us. And goodbye Mr. Sanders. We'll miss you.

A Will to Be Free: An African American Heritage Book (Start Publishing), by Booker T. Washington

Collected here in this omnibus edition are three influential autobiographies of prominent men who rose up from slavery to greatness. Essential reading for anyone interested in African American Heritage. Included are Up From Slavery by Booker T. Washington, Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup, and Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave by Frederick Douglass. Up from Slavery is one of the most influential biographies ever written. On one level it is the life story of Booker T. Washington and his rise from slavery to accomplished educator and activist. On another level it the story of how an entire race strove to better itself. Washington was constantly, and often bitterly, criticized by his contemporaries for being too conciliatory to whites and not concerned enough about civil rights. It would not be until after his death that the world would find out that he had indeed worked a great deal for civil rights anonymously behind the scenes. Twelve Years a Slave is the harrowing true story of Solomon Northup, a free black man living in New York. He was kidnaped by unscrupulous slave hunters and sold into slavery where he endured unimaginable degradation and abuse until his rescue twelve years later. A powerful and riveting condemnation of American slavery. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is one of the most influential autobiographies ever written. This classic did as much as or more than any other book to motivate the abolitionist to continue to fight for freedom in American. Frederick Douglass was born a slave, he escaped a brutal system, and through sheer force of will educated himself and became an abolitionist, editor, orator, author, statesman, and reformer. This is one of the most unlikely and powerful success stories ever written.

About the Author
Booker T. Washington was an African-American teacher, author, presidential advisor, and civil-rights leader. Born in Virginia in 1856, Washington was of the last generation born into slavery. After emancipation, Washington attended college in Virginia, and gained fame as a result of his 1895 speech about the importance of educating African Americans and his belief that African Americans were capable of great feats through education. Washington s contribution to educational equality was made greater by his influence in the social circles of millionaires and self-starters, and he was the first African American invited to the White House by President Theodore Roosevelt.

Booker T. Washington published five books with the aid of ghost writers, among them his first autobiography The Story of My Life and Work and his bestselling second biography Up from Slavery, which earned him his invite to the White House. Washington was also responsible for founding the National Negro Business League, which has, since 1966, been incorporated into Washington D.C. as the National Business League.

SOLOMON NORTHUP was born in 1808 and lived as a free man in Saratoga Springs, New York, with his wife and three children until his capture and enslavement in 1841. He was one of very few who were able to regain their freedom after being kidnapped and sold into slavery. After he returned to New York, he published his memoir and became an active abolitionist, lecturing throughout the Northeast about his experiences.

Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey (Frederick Douglass) was born a slave in Talbot County, Maryland. He took the name Douglass after escaping from the South in 1838.

As a leader in the abolitionist movement, Douglass was famed for his eloquent yet incisive political writing. And, like his near-contemporary, Booker T. Washington, understood the central importance of education in improving the lives of African Americans, and was therefore an early proponent of desegregation.

A firm believer in equal rights for all, Douglass attended a meeting of the National Council of Women in Washington, D.C., in the hours before his death in February 1895.
