On Pins and Needles (Sierra Fox Book 3), by Yolanda Sfetsos

All it takes is one freak to turn everything into a demonic ritual.

Sierra Fox, Book 3

Sierra Fox’s relationship with sexy werewolf Jason Papan is going great, but it doesn’t take a psychic to tell her someone’s out to get her. As usual, though, there’s too much else going on to worry about just another assassination attempt.

In addition to the demon-possessed freaks that still want her, a whole new bucket of trouble has been dumped in her path. The half-sister Sierra never knew she had isn’t a typical teenager. Willow comes with supernatural baggage that grows heavier every time someone close to her dies. And the load gets bigger every time the police find the body of another young girl.

Now Sierra’s not only dealing with the target on her own back, but the one that a power-hungry woman has painted on her poltergeist-magnet sister. As she finds herself drawn into the thick of a murder investigation, Sierra must face her deepest fears and embrace the darkest of her powers to overcome the looming threat. Or the prediction of her death might just come true.

Warning: Spook catching: never gets any easier, neither does trying to avoid being killed by a shadowy organization. Always expect the unexpected—dangerous vampires, poltergeists and demon-obsessed freaks. At least the werewolf is pleasurably safe.

The Sierra Fox series keeps getting better and better.
By MizMode
I knew I was going to read the third book because it's one of my favorite series and of course I wanted to know what was going to happen with Sierra, her friends and partners and her world. But I admit I was a little apprehensive about the long lost sister aspect and the fact she was a teenager. Long lost siblings usually means brats and chaos and I don't really like that type of storyline but this was handled extremely well. The way Sierra found out and the way it was shown to us was how it should be. I was quite surprised about that and I liked how Yolanda Sfetsos did it. There was chaos alright but it wasn't roll your eyes chaos and Sierra's sister was anything but bratty and oh so different. I really liked her.

I'm finally starting to like Ebony. She was a little off-putting at first but her going through more rough experiences changes a person and it was sad to see that happen to her.

I really like Sierra's friend, Lavie. If her problems aren't solved by the end of the series, I'd love to see her in a spin-off series or a short story where things end well for her and she gets a bit of happiness in her life.

I love the Lost reference in the book that has to deal with Jason Papan which makes me think of something else that was said by Ebony near the end of the book. It makes me wonder if that will be a later conflict in the series.

Anyway, some things were solved, some weren't, more problems evolved and a few twists and turns made my jaw drop and it was all so great.

I'm definitely looking forward to diving into more of the series.

A Good Find
By Eriegirl218
I delve into my Amazon recommendations nearly everyday and this series is why as it just "popped up" one day and I am so glad it did.
Sierra Fox is a spook catcher which means she see ghosts and can essentially arrest the bad ones. Of course she is no ordinary spook catcher and has the obligatory secrets of ancestry, but she and her friends are likable and filled with misadventures. My one complaint is that there are often too many misadventures going on at once!!
This is a great series and I cannot wait for more.

Buddhism: Questions for Consideration and Discussion

  • In what ways is the Buddhist worldview similar to or different from the traditional Western one, and how do both of these compare to the current scientific way of thinking? Are the Buddhist and Western conceptions incompatible?
  • Does it make sense to believe in reincarnation? If "no," are people like the Buddha deluded when they claim to remember past lives? If "yes," what evidence is there for it? What difference would it make to you now if you believed you would be reborn and live again?
  • Is karma the same as destiny, in the sense that everything that happens to you is predetermined? Do you believe that "what goes around comes around," and if so is this the same as karma? Does everyone get what they deserve, in the end?
  • Do people have a soul, and if so, what is it like? If not, what is it that makes you who you are, and how do you remain the same person if--as science tells us--the material basis of your being changes continuously? If your memories changed, would you be someone else?
  • Is Buddhism more or less environmentally friendly than Christianity? Which aspects of Buddhist teachings might make it appear in harmony with contemporary ecological attitudes? Do you think Buddha was concerned about the environment?

`Just as its name implies, this series features concise works that aim to give a crisp insight into otherwise complicated topics ... complicated subjects are condensed and made simple, to whet the appetite or provide just enough material for those with a casual interest.' Bournemouth Evening Echo

`Damien Keown ... His short account has been tried out in draft on students and is admirably lucid, anticipating and dealing well with the questions that are bound to come up.' Roger Farrington, The Middle Way, Vol. 71, No. 4, February 1997

`Damien Keown's book is a readable and wonderfully lucid introduction to one of mankind's most beautiful, profound, and compelling systems of wisdom. His impressive powers of explanation help us to come to terms with a vital contemporary reality.' Bryan Appleyard

`an excellent and highly readable account of a complex and multifarious subject. Even if you were to read nothing else, you would probably come away with a fair idea of what Buddhism is all about.' Looi Siew Tip, New Straits Times

`impressive' Sarah Marriott, Irish Times 13/5/00

    Rapid religion
    By Sarakani
The quality of a factual book should be judged by its lack of overt partiality, comprehensiveness, sources and ability to make you think and ask questions. This book scores well on all points and above all reads like an essay which you can zap through.
It contains a good bibliography for follow up reading and includes details of the the award winning "Journal of Buddhist ethics" on the web which was partly established by the author. Apart from the author's erudition his book is backed up by other experts and has been reviewed by his students.
Above all the book analyses what is meant by religion (as Buddhism does not easily fit this classification) and provides a modern interpretation of this system of thought from all its major perspectives. The treatment of Mahayana Buddhism short, yet precise and on the whole Keown concentrates on highlights. Towards the end is a discussion on Buddhism in the West. The book also provides useful comparisons with other religions.
Compared to many small and "cheap" introductions to Buddhism, this book is fairly impeccable. It is not perfect (2 tiny errors I identified with regards to scriptural quotations) but will lead anyone interested to work out what Buddhism is for him or herself, rather than being spoon fed as it were. I was however, disappointed that the book ended so fast - and glad at the follow up leads left, by this trustworthy writer.

Say, do you have a book I can read about this Buddha stuff?
    By A Customer
I wish I had read this book when I was first attempting to learn about Buddhism, because it is clear, concise, accurate, and (usually) respectful. It briefly covers the historical Buddha, the development and foundations of the different major branches, and the major themes, beliefs, and ideas. People are always asking me for a book that "explains Buddhism" and I always want to offer them something that has a good chance of opening their eyes. I used to give "What the Buddha Taught" but I plan on giving this in the future. Even though studious Buddhists may already know all the information here, it is still beautiful to read again in its simplicity and profunity. Also, a great biography.

Very valuable insights in a very short introduction
    By A Customer
This is not only an accessible volume, but also a very insightful one. Damien Keown has a good understanding of Buddhism and presented it in a short and simple format. Yet within its simplicity lies many valuable pearls and insights that are rarely seen in books of this size. There is the brief discussion on what is suffering in which he explain to great clarity why certain terms were used and what they mean. His dicussion on ethics is excellent. I would strongly recommend it to any reader, be it those only seeking a brief introduction or those who are already very well read on Buddhism.

A level 1 Oxford Bookworms Library graded readers. Retold for Learners of English by Jennifer Bassett

A woman and a man . . . words of love whispered on a summer night. Later, there is a child, but no wedding-ring. And then the man leaves the first woman, finds a younger woman, marries her . . . It's an old story.

Yes, it's an old, old story. It happens all the time -- today, tomorrow, a hundred years ago. People don't change. But this story, set among the green hills of southern England, has something different about it. Perhaps it is only a dream, or perhaps it is magic - a kind of strange dark magic that begins in the world of dreams and phantoms . . .

    Great Collection
    By Bill R. Moore
Thomas Hardy is best known for novels and poems but was also one of England's best short story writers. Besides mastering the form itself, Hardy used short stories as a training ground for themes and plot devices that often ended up in the novels, making them all the more interesting for fans and scholars. This has nine stories spread over about 350 pages - about a sixth of his total -, including some of his best and best-known. The selection is strong and representative, proceeding chronologically from Hardy's first published story until 1888's Wessex Tales, his first collection. Fans of the novels will certainly want these, but whether they will want this collection is an open question, as most of the stories are widely available. One plus is that it has two - "Destiny and a Blue Cloak" and "The Thieves Who Couldn't Help Sneezing" that are hard to find. They are very early and minor, but fans will certainly appreciate them. Perhaps more importantly, there is a wealth of bonus material: a general introduction stating the purpose of this Penguin Hardy series; a Hardy chronology; a map of Hardy's fictional Wessex; a scholarly introduction with substantial background on the stories and some critical analysis; suggestions for further reading; a history of the texts; detailed endnotes; a history of Hardy short stories; the original illustrations; and a glossary illuminating the heavy use of dialect and other unusual words. Those wanting more stories must of course look elsewhere, but one would have to search very hard for one of comparable length with as much bonus material. One oddity is that, in contrast to nearly all editions, the texts are from first volume publication rather than final edits. This may deter some, but hard-cores and scholars will probably welcome the distinction, and the notes in any event detail changes.

The stories vary in quality and significance. "Destiny" is Hardy's first real published story and is in many ways the blueprint for not only later short stories but much of his other work. Like more famous work, it has a female protagonist and focuses on forbidden love, but it is truly remarkable how many themes and philosophical concerns later fleshed out are already here. Hardy's interest in fate, chance, irony, and the universe's profound indifference toward humanity are on clear display. Much of the characterization and strong sense of place he became known for are also present. So is Hardy's penchant for complex plots; it is near-astonishing how much he could pack into a short work. This is also a good example of how he used shorts to test elements for novels, as he reused the major plot twist in his novel The Hand of Ethelberta. "Destiny" may lack the grand, tragic sweep of Hardy's best work but certainly has it in embryo; this would be one of most writers' best pieces.

A children's story with an obvious moral and some humor, "The Thieves" is probably the most light-hearted work from a writer synonymous with dark ones. It has little in common with his other fiction and is almost certainly his least significant, but fans will still enjoy it, and those who do not normally like Hardy may well appreciate the interesting variation on a standard template.

"The Distracted Preacher" is one of Hardy's best shorts. The profound sense of place so prevalent in the novels is here in strong force, as he makes the rural coastal setting seem to truly come alive. The plot is also one of his most conventionally exciting, full of mystery and suspense involving the smuggling trade he had heard much about from relatives. The story explores several characteristic major themes; for example, it has perhaps Hardy's subtlest and most ambiguous depiction of rural poverty's consequences and variously examines his lifelong interest in religion and preachers. Many of his views were far ahead of his time, as this dramatization clearly shows. The preacher's conventional morality is contrasted with bold practicality, implicitly questioning much that Victorians took for granted. The ending made it seem palatable but now comes off as distinctly pat, especially to those aware of Hardy's true sympathies. He later admitted that he felt pressured to make it conventional in order to be published and described his far more appropriate chosen ending, thankfully given in the notes.

"Fellow-Townsmen" is probably Hardy's short masterpiece, great enough to justify purchasing the book for it alone. Though only fifty pages, it has the characterization, plot complexity, and thematic depth of most novels and reads much like one. Fans will indeed see several similarities to various Hardy novels, as this vein is so rich he drew on it more than once. Remarkably for such a short work, the story has some of his most memorable characters and scenes. There is a tone of intense drama throughout, and this is one of Hardy's most emotional works - which truly says much. More importantly and notably, Hardy's concern with fate and coincidence so melodramatically ironic that it seems malevolent is at full strength. The story abounds with missed opportunities and regrets, showing the dark sides of love and the human condition. The grand, sweeping feel of immense tragedy that pervades his greatest novels is here, and the town's vivid portrayal is on par with better-known settings. Simply put, the work's greatness is such that Hardy would have to be called a great writer of short stories even if this were his only one.

"The Three Strangers" is likely Hardy's most famous short story, so popular that he turned it into a one-act play decades later. However, I do not think it is one of his best and regret that it overshadows greater work. It is enjoyable to be sure - deftly plotted and superbly executed - but lacks the vibrant dramatization of weighty themes that characterizes his best work, relying primarily on a clever plot twist. Still, the opening has some of Hardy's most unforgettable prose, the suspense is unusually high, and the plot can perhaps be seen as a more conventionally exciting depiction of his central concerns. This is another that those who do not usually like Hardy may especially enjoy.

"The Romantic Adventures of a Milkmaid" is of novella length, another great work and one that probably influenced the novels more than any other short story. It is in many ways a prototype for Tess of the D'Urbervilles and the contemporaneous short stories in A Group of Noble Dames, not least in its female protagonist. Hardy portrays farm labor's harsh reality with stunning realism, and the contrast with rich society life is movingly striking. However, the story also has obvious fairy tale elements; this combination and the intermediate length make it unique. It is on one level among Hardy's most affecting and thought-provoking rural poverty depictions, but there are many other dark elements. Its portrayal of love as an essentially self-destructive force leading to hopeless obsession anticipates his late novelistic masterpieces, and the ambiguous Baron is one of Hardy's most fascinating characters. He is in one sense a hedonistic creature of almost pure, even archetypal, evil like Desperate Remedies' Aeneas Manston or Tess' Alec D'Urberville, yet deep melancholy and a tragic nature make him sympathetic. The plot is deliberately one of Hardy's least realistic, but the symbolism - not least in regard to class issues - inherent in his encounters with the milkmaid is patent, and the tackling of higher themes is well-executed. Like Paula Power in A Laodicean, the Baron's nature is essentially ambivalent, and so is the story's conclusion. Hardy later significantly revised it, but this tantalizing yet undeniably appealing quality remained. This is in many ways one of his most subtly complex works and also one of his most overlooked.

"Interlopers at the Knap" is a minor story covering very familiar Hardy territory, but an exquisitely drawn setting and fine characterization make it very readable. We get yet another sympathetic heroine, and the story makes a push for female independence in an area where they had little. Regret and missed opportunities are again ubiquitous, though the plot and conclusion are less dark than many other works', and the strong protagonist's ironclad will recalls more famous Hardy female leads. In contrast to prior works like Far from the Madding Crowd, though, the ending does not bow to convention, making this a near-inversion of typical Victorian courtship stories and thus more interesting and complex than it may first seem.

"The Waiting Supper" is far more substantial - indeed, a near-masterpiece. Many elements again recall other works, but this wayward love is so movingly and believably depicted that the story is one of Hardy's most pathos-drenched. Place and characterization are superb as always, and the plot is one of the most adventurous and suspenseful among Hardy shorts. The story is another ambiguity exercise, particularly the ending, and the depiction of happy marriage as near-unattainable is characteristic of later Hardy fiction. This is a work that first seems conceived only to bring tears - which it likely will -, but the ambivalent conclusion is quite thought-provoking. "The Waiting" again essentially inverts the Victorian love template, but Hardy lets us decide if the ambivalent outcome is the best possibility.

"The Withered Arm" rivals "Fellow-Townsmen" as Hardy's best short work; though lacking the latter's novelistic sweep, it is more tightly written and thus a better success in pure short story terms. This may even be Hardy's most superbly plotted and masterfully executed tale of all; the mysterious and foreboding threads coalesce in a dark, seemingly inevitable ending exemplifying Hardy's cruel fate twists. It does not take on grand concerns to the extent most of his best work does but is in many ways one of his bleakest stories; its vision of humanity headed toward a tragic end with little or no control over events is unforgettable. Hardy's best novels are replete with such drama, but no prior short story conveyed it so fully or well. "The Withered" is also an appropriate close for the book, being in many ways the culmination of Hardy's fiction to that point. It is one of his few works to have central scenes in both Casterbridge - the largest town in Wessex - and the surrounding countryside, while the cast of milkmaids, hanging judges, wronged women, and nervous new wives seems to have stepped out of a myriad Hardy stories. Not least interestingly, though much of Hardy's work is steeped in rural Southwest England folklore, this is virtually his only fiction with a strong supernatural element. His editor and friend Leslie Stephen criticized the element's ambiguity, saying he was unsure whether to believe or not, but this was surely Hardy's point; he again lets us judge. Far more important in any case are the dark forces at the story's heart - forces that soon dominated the little fiction he had left to write.

This brings up one of the book's most important virtues - it leads to other Hardy fiction, particularly his overlooked short works. Readers must choose how they want to read the stories, but they should certainly be read. Though less important and acclaimed than his novels, they are an essential part of his genius and will delight fans of the longer works.

Great text, but many images and examples are not in English.
    By D. Manders
If this review only took into account the text of the book, I'd give it five stars. I own a small, local service business with a few locations, and though this book is intended primarily for people interested in service design as a profession, I've found it very insightful as a business owner. My company is planning on expanding in the near future, and I'm incorporating a lot of the ideas and processes in this book into a refinement of our service proposition before we do. The text is clear and concise, and offers valuable insights for a small business owner looking to refine their offering and put themselves a level above their competition.

That said, the glaring shortcoming of this book is the photos/graphic examples. A significant portion of these come from one of the authors' work for Gjensidige, an insurance company in Norway. While there is nothing wrong with this—and in fact I like having a common thread of examples run through a text like this so it's easy to comprehend how different concepts are relative to the whole—the examples have not been translated into English. This is a serious, serious flaw and I can't understand how the publisher let this get through. There are numerous images from the company's website displayed in Norweigan, but if I visit the site myself Chrome knows it's not English and offers to translate it for me so it would have taken a minimal amount of work to display it as such in the book. I can only assume that the images were taken during the design work and reused in the book, which would be fine if they were in English, but in this case is downright lazy. An even more egregious example are the sample Channel Specifications on pages 125 and 126, which serve to provide more detail on specific touchpoints in the service blueprint. These are simply screenshots of text files—which one of the authors clearly has access to as it was his own work—which no one bothered to translate. The result is two full pages of graphic examples which can convey nothing to a non-Norweigan speaker other than: "A Channel Specification should be a series of paragraphs".

I hope that the authors and publishers fix this in future editions, as this is an otherwise excellent book. At the very least, while it doesn't excuse the oversight of giving English readers examples in Norweigan, it would be great if English language copies of these images and examples were made available on a website for owners of the current edition.

Simple and complete introduction to service design
    By Maish Nichani
This book nicely unpacks service design for the practitioner. Other books on service design made the discipline look more complicated than what it really is.

    Here's what I liked:

    * The authors use case studies to explain concepts. The insurance case study in chapter 1 itself is worth the price of the book.
    * Methods such as blueprinting and prototyping are discussed, but unlike other books, the authors nicely describe how to put the methods to use.
    * The language is simple and easy to understand. I finished most of the book in one sitting.
    * The book is complete. Stuff like selling, sustaining and measuring service design are also covered.

Here are a few of the many nuggets of wisdom I picked up from the book:

"Applying the same mindset to designing a service as to the design of a product can lead to customer-hostile rather than user-friendly results"

"The problem is that customers don't just care about individual touch points. They experience services in totality and base their judgement on how well everything works together to provide them with value."

"The most rewarding way to use the theatrical metaphor is to think about service as improvisational theatre. If you provide users and staff with a good 'stage' on which to interact, and give them well-defined roles, clear goals, and the necessary props, people are likely to make the most out of the situation and create great experiences together."

Great Book, clear, easy to understand with terrific examples
    By Mark P. McDonald
Service Design is one of the best books I have read this year as it unpacks the jargon ladened discipline of service design. The term service design reflects an enhancement of products, services and experiences to reflect the competitive, digital and consumer powered world we face. How you design experience into a product, particularly from the customers point of view is a challenge and service design is one answer to that challenge.

The chapter structure of the book provides an illustration to the clarity, focus and actionability of the advice offered in this book. You will not be a 'service designer' after having read the book, but you can be a highly productive participant in a service design project.

Chapter 1: "Insurance is a service, not a product" provides an end to end case example of how service design applies to in a real market context.

Chapter 2: The nature of service design covers its development, evolution and basic way of thinking.

Chapter 3: Understanding people and relationships looks at the human element, across all actors, in setting expectations and creating experiences that drive effective services.

Chapter 4: Turning research into insight looks at tools and methods for taking qualitative input and quantitative data to create meaningful insight.

Chapter 5: Describing the service ecology recognizes that while 'the product stands alone' a service lives in the white space between multiple people and actors. Fans of "ecosystems' will enjoy this chapter.

Chapter 6: Developing a service proposition gets into the meat of the tools and techniques which are beautifully illustrated in the text.

Chapter 7: Prototyping service experiences is pretty self explanatory discussing the different techniques etc.

Chapter 8: Measuring services addresses one of the hot buttons of service design -- how do you know they are working?

Chapter 9: The challenges facing service design provides a look forward at the potential of service thinking to change business, society and commerce.

This book lays out the service design rational, basic process and major deliverables (service blueprint) in less than 200 pages. Polaine, Lovlie and Reason has written a book that is largely free of 'design' jargon and readily accessible to the business or technology professional. Overall this is an excellent book and highly recommended.

The Sacrifice: The Father Koesler Mysteries: Book 23, by William Kienzle

"The clever plot, the subtle clues, and above all, the ideas make this well worth reading." —West Coast Review of Books

From William X. Kienzle, author of the classic mystery, The Rosary Murders.

When Father George Wheatley decided to convert from the Anglican Church to the Roman Catholic, he thought he had painstakingly considered the sacrifices he would have to make. He knew his celebrity status as a beloved Anglican priest, evidenced by his newspaper column and radio show, would be in jeopardy. He understood the strain the change would put on his wife and children and the challenges he would face to be accepted as a married Roman Catholic priest. He even acknowledged that reactionaries in both camps would oppose such a spiritual changeover. But he never dreamed that his decision would breed such waves of ambition, jealousy, and hatred that the ultimate human sacrifice—murder—would be the result. Nor did he appreciated how much of a sacrifice would be asked of him.

In his twenty-third appearance, Father Robert Koesler, a Detroit parish priest with a penchant for being involved in murder, accompanies his friend Father Wheatley through his tortured path to conversion and helps him seek resolution of a crime. With his compassion, knowledge of human nature, and experience, Father Koesler is able to not only resolve a murder mystery, but also to give true understanding to the concept of sacrifice.

    From Publishers Weekly
The latest in the author's long-running series of didactic mysteries featuring Detroit priest Father Robert Koesler (following Till Death) restores a better balance between mystery and religion. As usual, a thorny religious issue is at the center of things, and Kienzle has posited a doozy. Father George Wheatley, an Episcopal priest of some renown, has undertaken to convert to Roman Catholicism. That decision has caused great consternation in Wheatley's family as well as shock in the Episcopal and Roman communities. In addition to continuing to flog the changes wrought by Vatican II, the author explores such issues as the differences and similarities between Anglicans, Episcopalians and Romans (all of whom consider themselves Catholics), and whether Catholic priests should be permitted to marry and women allowed to become priests. Sharing center stage, and danger, with Wheatley are Father Koesler, who has befriended him during his conversion, and Father Zachary Tully, whose church will be the site of Wheatley's ordination. Plenty of folk are opposed to Wheatley's ordination, including his (Episcopal) priest son, Ron; his seminarian daughter, Alice; and various lay and clerical Roman Catholics who see Wheatley's conversion as one more assault on their venerable church. When a murderer strikes before the ordination can take place, Koesler and the police must scramble to unmask someone willing to kill for his or her beliefs. In a series that has not been aging well, this is a refreshingly strong entry. (Apr. 1)

    From Library Journal
The impending ordination of a former Episcopal priest into the Catholic church in Detroit turns into murder when an explosion at the altar kills a priest. Homicide detective Tully, retired detective Koznicki, Father Robert Koesler (series "resource person"), and George Wheatley, the "changeling," immediately analyze, inform, and hypothesize. Suspects are numerous, including two of Wheatley's own children one an Episcopal priest, the other a closet lesbian seminarian so police face an uphill struggle. A tedious exposition, argumentative and/or didactic digressions, and cheap narrative tricks label this a potboiler; nevertheless, buy for Kienzle's (The Rosary Murders) steady following.

    Review
“William Kienzle is the Harry Kemelman of Catholicism. . . . Robert Koesler is the Detroit response to Rabbi Small.”
    –Los Angeles Times

“As Kienzle addresses serious modern issues, he stops to digress and tell his wonderful stories . . . providing a neat solution with a twist.”
    –The Philadelphia Inquirer

    Journey to Priesthood
    By John T. Farrell
I've been a fan of William X. Kienzle since way back when. In this case, "when" being my introduction to the thoughtful clerical detective, Father Robert Koesler, in Kienzle's first two mysteries, "The Rosary Murders" and "Death Wears a Red Hat." In "The Sacrifice," Father Koesler's twenty-third appearance, Kienzle explores an ecumenical setting dear to my heart: the relationship between the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches, two denominations that are remarkably similar, vastly different, and deeply misunderstood by the other. To facilitate the plot, the author not only brings Father Koesler out of retirement, but his friend and Watson, the courtly and devout Inspector Walter Koznicki, as well.
Father George Wheatley is an Episcopal priest who is taking advantage of the so-called "Anglican Use Provision" in the Roman Catholic Church that allows priests in the Anglican Communion to be reordained in the Roman church despite being married. Father Wheatley's motives for his switch are complex and engender opposition both from his family and from Anglican and Roman traditionalists. The result is a bomb explosion at his ordination, missing the target but killing another priest.
Despite the beguiling plot and Kienzle's sensitive and informed understanding of Anglicanism (one flaw though: he doesn't really know how Episcopal bishops are selected), "The Sacrifice" fails to deliver as a mystery. Father Koesler spends more time explaining the Anglican ethos than solving the mystery. And the plot has too many weaknesses, including a number of separate crimes masquerading as one, a multiplicity of suspects and detectives, a plethora of one-dimensional characters, and myriad plot threads that are never really resolved -- for instance, the fates of Wheatley's closeted lesbian seminarian daughter and his ambitious daughter-in-law.
The Father Koesler series may have run out of steam. Kienzle has tried various ploys to revive it in recent years, most notably the introduction of a second-string priest/detective team, the long lost Tully brothers. None have really worked. Much as I hate to say it, it might be more merciful to let Father Koesler retire in peace.

    Fascinating but talky mystery
    By booksforabuck
Father Wheatley has decided to leave the Anglican church and join the Roman Catholic--as a priest and bringing his wife with him. Catholic fundamentalists, Anglicans, and his family are all concerned and angry. Somebody is angry enough to set a bomb that would have killed Wheatley if he hadn't been delayed. The police ask Catholic Priest, Father Koesler for help.
Author William X. Kienzle gives us an assortment of angry red herrings... Could one of the hot-headed but aging priests have taken this ultimate step to defend their religion? Koesler is certain that there is a religious connection and a way to determine the truth.
Kienzle does a fine job developing his characters. Koesler, in particular, is likable and believable. His writing style, however, does lend itself to talkiness. Although all of the information he presents was very interesting, I would have preferred to have it given to me once, and get on with the mystery.
Look at THE SACRIFICE as a two-fer. It's a fine mystery and a fascinating look into Roman Catholic politics (Kienzle is an ex-priest) as well as some of the differences and similarities between two important Christian religions.

knows his city, knows his church
    By Karen Sampson Hudson
William Kienzle, a former priest, writes darn good mystery novels, filled with lore about church politics, the hierarchy and current issues. Set in Detroit, "The Sacrifice" is a satisfying read which will keep your interest throughout. Kienzle is especially skilled at detailing his characters---cops, cops' wives, priests( and in this case, priest's wife!)
Those familiar with Detroit will be pleased to recognize familiar streets, landmarks, stores, institutions. Kienzle paints an affectionate, even rather proprietary picture of his city. Women will be pleased to find his generous yet accurate assessments of his female characters. His skill at writing about women's feelings and motives has grown in his career, and his more recent books are informed by good insights. (He gives credit to his wife in the dedication of "The Sacrifice.")
This is an enjoyable book which will keep you guessing until the final pages.
