What a terrific teaching resource

This book shows how to turn reading The Odyssey into a meaningful, relevant course in ethical philosophy. Like many teachers out there, I have taught The Odyssey for a number of years and always felt my teaching of it to be a little dry--focus on the hero figure, etc. This book is completely reinvigorating.

Krise ist das globale Schlagwort des Tages. Zunächst und vor allem auf der großen Bühne der Weltfinanz- und Wirtschaftspolitik, von wo aus mittel- oder unmittelbar alle anderen Bereiche betroffen werden. Es geht um nichts weniger als die Neuordnung der Systeme. Die Frage, die sich allen dabei stellt, ist: Wer kann die Krise bewältigen und wer kann es nicht?
Die Situation des deutschsprachigen Romans am Anfang der literarischen Moderne war eine krisenhafte – dies zumindest diagnostizierten und diskutierten nicht wenige der führenden Autoren, Essayisten und Publizisten des noch jungen 20. Jahrhunderts, allen voran Otto Flake, der mit seinem Artikel Die Krise des Romans von 1922 zum Stichwortgeber wurde. Andere Autoren distanzierten sich von dieser These, indem sie sowohl argumentativ als auch literarisch den Beweis anzutreten versuchten, dass von Krise keine Rede sein konnte. Wie konnte es zu einer solchen Diskussion kommen? Welche waren die Punkte, die für, und welche, die gegen eine Krise sprachen? Und welche Lösungswege beschritten die beteiligten Autoren?
Die vorliegende Arbeit hat sich die Aufgabe gestellt, Antworten auf diese Fragen zu finden. In einem ersten Schritt soll dazu die Stellung der Romanautoren in den Jahren vor und während der Weimarer Republik beleuchtet werden, wobei es zu erörtern gilt, wie und wann der literarische Epochenbegriff „Moderne“ in Deutschland entstand, der aus der Gegenwart betrachtet längst klassisch ist – scheinbar ein Paradoxon? Sodann sollen mögliche verursachende Momente für die Romankrise nachzeichnet und ausgewählte Diskussionsbeiträge von Otto Flake, Alfred Döblin, Robert Musil, Hermann Broch, Jakob Wassermann, Thomas Mann und Walter Benjamin im Hinblick auf ihre Hauptargumente reflektiert werden. Im dritten Teil liegt das Augenmerk auf drei Werken, die als Lösungsvorschläge gelten können. Es sind dies Der Zauberberg von Thomas Mann, Berlin Alexanderplatz von Alfred Döblin und Die Schlafwandler von Hermann Broch. Diese Reihenfolge ist chronologisch belassen, um formale, inhaltliche und stilistische Entwicklungen und erzähltechnische Innovationen im Verlauf der Epoche besser aufzeigen zu können. Gerade die Tatsache, dass es sich hier um drei völlig unterschiedliche Romane handelt, gibt einen Eindruck von der Vielgestalt, welche die Wege aus der Krise anzunehmen im Stande waren.

It's something to allow yourself when there's nobody else around, an indulgence, a reward for a day's fronted pleasantness," muses the dying college professor in "Kokopelli." The most resonant pieces are the genuinely affecting "Big Texas," in which a football player recently forced into retirement forges an unlikely but sustaining three-way friendship with his best friend and his best friend's wife, for whom he carries a sizable torch; and "Home and Family," in which a middle-aged man finds he can cope with a recent layoff and divorce in his own dignified, albeit eccentric, manner. Rawlins's first collection of short stories, set mostly in the American West, won the Flannery O'Connor Award for short fiction. Whether young, like the Washington farmboy who can't wait to escape his small town in the title story, or prematurely old, like the 37-year-old bachelor who lives with his father in "Still Life with Father," each character describes a restless life. Women come and go as fast as hard-earned dollars slipping from one's fingers on a Saturday night. Happiness is defined as a fresh start in a new town. The ten stories in this collection are well crafted and written in a straightforward, readable manner; Rawlins is particularly good with dialog, which flows easily and sounds natural. About the Author
Frank John Ninivaggi, M.D., is an Associate Attending Physician at Yale-New Haven Hospital, an Assistant Clinical Professor of Child Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine, Yale Child Study Center, and a member of the Yale-New Haven Community Medical Group. He is the Medical Director of the Devereux Glenholme School in Washington, Connecticut. He currently holds university and hospital appointments at the Yale Child Study Center, Yale University School of Medicine where he earlier received Fellowship specialty training in child and adolescent psychiatry. He is in private practice in New Haven, Connecticut.

Die Arbeit befasst sich hierbei mit den wechselnden Doktrinen der Wirtschaftspolitik, präziser mit Lenin’s Neuen Ökonomischen Politik, sowie der stalinistischen Planwirtschaft, welche dieser unter extremen sozialen Kosten vorangetrieben hat. Abschließend wird auf die Weltwirtschaftskrise eingegangen, da diese als Indikator der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit einer Industrienation in Bezug auf deren Konkurrenten gesehen werden kann.

A disappointing romance...

**Spoiler alert!** I am an ESL teacher and my students and I are reviewing books for our first "book fair." Alongside my students, I selected my own "level 4" book to read from our collection of level readers. I picked up this book in the hopes that it would be a beautiful romantic story and that I could recommend it to my students who like such stories. The title and the cover looked both inviting and mysterious. When I discovered that the book was about the life journey of a young lady in the late 19th century, my hopes got even higher that I would enjoy it. Then, when I learned that the main female character had fallen in love for the first time with a very handsome and caring man, I thought my expectations for old-fashioned romance would be met. However, as the story developed, more and more doubt emerged in my mind about the sincerity of the relationship between them. Ultimately, I found the ending to be very unsatisfying. The book leaves you with more questions than any answers. If you enjoy this kind of story, I recommend it. However, you're a die-hard romantic like myself, you may feel that you're disappointed, left hanging and wanting more. I felt like I was left out in the dark by this story.

Every major team sport is covered, and many interesting comparisons can be made especially between the North American League organization and the European-style promotion and relegation leagues. Things are not going well for Fred Wagner, a typical Berger victim. His wife has left him, his job as a catalog copywriter is becoming increasingly unsatisfying, and his novel, after six years, has not progressed beyond the opening pages. Wagner discovers, however, that he does have a talenthe can make himself invisibleand the novel recounts his struggle to make the best of this unique gift. But surprisingly, Wagner finds that whether he is trying to bypass a long line, steal from a bank, or avoid his co-workers, invisibility has its drawbacks; rather than improving his situation, each invisible adventure leads to a further mishap. In subject and tone, Berger's novel is similar to Charles Simmons's Powdered Eggs (1964), but it is less innovative in style and narrative technique. Recommended for larger fiction collections. The plot vanished right in front of my face

Berger could write, he was a talented story teller, and this small novel has all the successful elements of a great story. A mediocre protagonist, with a dead-end career, and a wife that just left him. It also could be a country and western song, but I'll stay on target here. Fred Wagner suddenly finds out he can become invisible at will, but being the unambitious person that he is, never really does anything interesting with his new found gift. Which is the problem with Berger's story, it never really goes anywhere. And even that's ok, as long as you keep me interested. After a while, I didn't really care what happened next. Which is too bad because Berger really was a talented writer.

Being Invisible- find it!

I found "Being Invisible" along with Berger's "Nowhere" in a family member's book collection passed down to me. "Being Invisible" was very entertaining, I laughed out loud several times, which I rarely do with books.

Berger's protagonist gets into many hilarious situations as he discovers that his depressing life has given him the ability to become invisible. Rather than performing heroic acts, Wagner uses his ability to avoid coworkers and spy on his ex-wife. Wagner elicits both sympathy and laughs as his invisibility gets himself into and out of many compromising situations.

I highly recommend that you read Being Invisible, I'm glad I stumbled upon it.

A well written satirical novel

This is an entertaining piece of social satire. It's a quick read that is absolutely hilarious in places. Being able to make yourself invisible seems like something that would transform the average guy into a super hero or at least provide a lot of unique entertainment. But in Berger's story the ability to make himself invisible at will only gets Fred Wagner in more and more hot water. He gets in trouble with his ex-wife, with his co-workers and with a pair of really funny possessive females.

Berger gets in some solid jabs at middle class life in New York City and I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys well written, off beat satire.
